East Campus Gastrointestinal Surgery Department 1
The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery I of Qingdao Municipal Hospital is a key specialty in medicine and health in Shandong Province and a provincial clinical key discipline. As a department of a hospital that occupies a leading position in clinical care, scientific research, and teaching in the region, our department has developed its own distinctive strengths in gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, proctology, hernia and abdominal wall surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and enhanced recovery after surgery, among other areas, reaching an advanced level in China.
Based on solid practical experience in general surgery and guided by advanced treatment concepts and guidelines, our department has not only become proficient in conventional general surgery but was also the first in Qingdao to perform laparoscopic radical surgery for gastric cancer and colorectal cancer. These procedures offer advantages including precise anatomy, minimal blood loss, smaller postoperative incisions, and faster recovery. In recent years, we have also performed laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernias and incisional hernias, achieving good results. In the treatment of thyroid diseases, attention is paid to protecting the recurrent laryngeal nerves and parathyroid glands; postoperative complications such as hoarseness are infrequent, and treatment outcomes are satisfactory. Our department was the first in the hospital to establish multidisciplinary collaboration (MDT), selecting the most suitable individualized treatment plan for tumor patients. Through strict perioperative management, protection of the function of vital organs, and enhanced capability in treating critically ill patients, surgical complications are greatly reduced and patient safety is ensured. The concept of enhanced recovery after surgery is implemented throughout all aspects of medical care and nursing to promote postoperative recovery and reduce patients' financial burden.
Comprehensive treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors is a specialty of our department. Professor Lin Huizhong was appointed to the GIPAP project of the China Charity Federation because of his special contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of stromal tumors, and has accumulated extensive experience in surgery, postoperative treatment, and follow-up of gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
The proctology team of our department primarily performs minimally invasive modified shortcut surgery for slow-transit constipation; primary anastomosis with sphincter preservation for low and ultra-low rectal lesions; PPH surgery for mixed hemorrhoids; and radical surgery for anal fistula, perianal abscess, and anal fissure, among others. Each year, more than 500 patients with mixed hemorrhoids (PPH surgery), anal fistula, perianal abscess, anal fissure, and other conditions are admitted. Surgical outcomes are good, and hospital stays are short. Hundreds of low or ultra-low rectal primary anastomoses without stoma creation have now been successfully completed.
Our nursing team was the first in our city to implement ultrasound-guided peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement, relieving the concerns of patients requiring long-term infusion therapy. The team has also developed distinctive nursing services, including specialized ostomy guidance and individualized nutritional therapy. Patient social events are held regularly, and questions are answered through the WeChat official account, receiving high praise from patients.
Regarding medical equipment, the department is equipped with the latest diagnostic and treatment devices, including an ECG monitoring system, high-definition laparoscopes, ultrasound, and heated enteral nutrition pumps, providing strong hardware support for patient recovery.
