Main Campus Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Department
The Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Qingdao Municipal Hospital was founded in 1969 by Professor Wang Xunjiong, a renowned surgical scientist, and is one of the earliest independent hepatobiliary surgery specialties in China’s medical community. It was successively designated by the Shandong Provincial Health Department as the “Shandong Provincial Distinctive Medical and Health Specialty” and the “Shandong Provincial Key Medical and Health Specialty.” In 2013, under the leadership of Director Xu Ping, the hospital introduced center-based management for hepatobiliary surgery, encompassing the hepatobiliary surgery departments at the East and West campuses and including the Clinical Center of the Ministry of Health’s Key Laboratory of Cell Transplantation. The hepatobiliary surgery departments at the two campuses currently have 80 beds and 21 physicians. Among them are 4 chief physicians, 9 deputy chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians; postgraduates account for 66.6%, including 6 holders of doctoral degrees and 4 doctoral students currently enrolled; 7 holders of master’s degrees and 2 master’s students currently enrolled, 1 postdoctoral supervisor, and 6 master’s supervisors. They possess advanced duodenoscopes and choledochoscopes, imported laparoscopes, a radiofrequency treatment device for liver cancer, an imported ERBE multifunctional electrosurgical workstation for surgery, self-developed gasless laparoscopic surgical instruments, an independent cell transplantation laboratory at a leading level in China, and more.
The Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery has developed a complete set of standardized and systematic methods for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, and duodenum. For complex and difficult diseases such as intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones, acute severe pancreatitis, primary hepatocellular carcinoma, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, extrahepatic bile duct tumors, tumors of the ampulla of Vater, pancreatic tumors, portal hypertension caused by cirrhosis due to chronic hepatitis B, and secondary hypersplenism, it has developed comprehensive treatment approaches centered on surgery. In particular, research into and treatment of complex biliary stone disease has had a significant influence both in China and abroad. At the same time, in minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy, duodenoscopy, choledochoscopy, radiofrequency and microwave ablation, and others, it has accumulated extensive experience and mature techniques, and was the first in Qingdao to perform single-port laparoscopy, suspension laparoscopy, and gallbladder-preserving surgery. The laparoscopic procedures currently performed include laparoscopic cholecystectomy, common bile duct exploration, splenectomy, liver tumor resection, and resection of the body and tail of the pancreas, among others. The overall level of medical care holds a leading position in the field of hepatobiliary surgery in Qingdao and Shandong Province and is at an advanced national level.
The department has the Clinical Center of the Ministry of Health’s Cell Transplantation Laboratory and is equipped with advanced molecular biology and cell transplantation laboratory equipment. In 2004, it took the lead in China in completing a case of combined transplantation of human embryonic and adult pancreatic islets for the treatment of type 1 diabetes; the project received support from 3 provincial-level research projects and 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects; the discipline undertook a total of 6 scientific research projects at or above the provincial/ministerial level and 5 municipal scientific research projects; it received 6 provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards and 3 municipal science and technology awards; and it published more than 120 papers. In scientific research, it holds a leading position among institutions in the same field in Qingdao.
At present, the Hepatobiliary Surgery Center undertakes undergraduate clinical medicine teaching for students at Qingdao University, Dalian Medical University, Nanjing Medical University, and Weifang Medical College; it is also a graduate training base for the School of Medicine of Shandong University, Dalian Medical University, Qingdao University School of Medicine, Taishan Medical College, and Weifang Medical College. It has 5 master’s supervisors; over the past 5 years, it has independently trained 13 master’s degree graduates, and 5 are currently enrolled.
