East Campus Thoracic Surgery Department
Our hospital’s Department of Thoracic Surgery was established in the 1950s and has a history of more than 50 years to date. It was the earliest thoracic surgery specialty in our city and is also one of the earliest-established thoracic surgery specialties in Shandong Province. The Thoracic Surgery Department of the East Campus has strong technical capabilities and highly skilled expertise. It currently has 38 beds, 6 physicians, and 15 nurses, including 1 professor/chief physician, 3 deputy chief physicians, 2 holders of doctoral degrees, and 1 holder of a master’s degree. It has 1 modern thoracoscopy training and research laboratory, and its medical equipment is advanced and comprehensive.
The scope of diagnosis and treatment includes: 1. Pulmonary surgery: for various malignant and benign pulmonary diseases, lobectomy, segmentectomy, pneumonectomy, bronchial sleeve resection, double-sleeve resection of the bronchus and pulmonary artery, and other procedures. 2. Esophageal surgery: for malignant and benign diseases of the esophagus and cardia, benign tumor excision, cardia tumor resection, radical resection of esophageal tumors in all segments, esophageal replacement using the stomach, colon, or jejunum, esophageal stripping, and other procedures. 3. Mediastinal surgery: resection of various mediastinal tumors; mediastinal lymph node biopsy. 4. Thoracic trauma: the department has extensive experience in treating rib fractures, sternal fractures, pulmonary injuries, esophageal injuries, hemothorax, pneumothorax, pulmonary contusion, respiratory distress syndrome, and other conditions caused by thoracic trauma. 5. Chest wall surgery: resection of various chest wall tumors, chest wall reconstruction, and other procedures.
Minimally invasive thoracic surgery: this includes the use of small incisions, thoracoscopy, mediastinoscopy, and other techniques to perform pulmonary resection, resection of esophageal and cardia cancers, mediastinal tumor resection, surgical treatment of hemopneumothorax, and procedures such as mediastinoscopic resection and biopsy of mediastinal tumors and lymph nodes, with minimal trauma and minimal interference with the body’s physiology. These procedures are at a leading level in the province and the city. In cases of giant mediastinal tumors or pulmonary tumors encasing major blood vessels, which are generally considered inoperable, our department has performed dozens of surgical resections and vascular reconstructions; all were successful, with good outcomes, placing the department at a leading level nationally. Regarding tracheal surgery, for giant intratracheal tumors in cases where tracheal intubation for surgery is impossible, our department has successfully performed tracheal tumor resection under cardiopulmonary bypass, with good outcomes. It was the second institution in China to perform this procedure and is at a leading level nationally.
The department undertakes teaching for Dalian Medical University, Nanjing Medical University, the Medical College of Qingdao University, Weifang Medical College, and many other medical colleges and universities in China.
