East Campus Health Care/Geriatrics Department
The department currently has 21 beds and 19 medical and nursing staff, including 3 doctors with doctoral degrees, 5 with master's degrees, 5 associate chief physicians, and 2 attending physicians. It is equipped with telemetry ECG monitoring, defibrillators, ambulatory blood-pressure monitors, and sleep-breathing monitors.
Grounded in geriatric medicine, the department is a comprehensive internal-medicine department integrating medical care, health care, teaching, and research. It focuses on multimorbidity in older adults, polypharmacy management, long-term management of chronic diseases in older adults, geriatric nutrition, and rehabilitation. Based on older patients' disease characteristics, it provides comprehensive systematic diagnosis and treatment for common and frequently occurring diseases in older adults.
With comprehensive geriatric assessment as its core, the department promotes multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment in response to the characteristics of older adults—“multiple coexisting diseases, polypharmacy, and frailty”—breaking the limitations of single-disease diagnosis and treatment. It conducts comprehensive assessments from multiple dimensions, including frailty, sarcopenia, nutritional-risk screening, cognitive function, and polypharmacy management. It specializes in standardized diagnosis and treatment of common geriatric chronic diseases and syndromes, such as geriatric hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, diabetes, pulmonary infection, and electrolyte disorders. It emphasizes polypharmacy management and nutritional support, formulates individualized treatment plans for older patients, and achieves “coordinated integration” and “overall optimization” of multiple health problems. The department team has extensive experience in treating critically ill older patients. It adheres to individualized treatment plans, provides long-term chronic-disease management, health education, and guidance on whole-cycle care, and improves older patients’ quality of life to the greatest extent.
Focusing on clinical hotspots such as multimorbidity in older adults, geriatric syndromes, and chronic-disease management, the department conducts research and has published many papers in domestic and international journals. It combines theory with clinical practice, emphasizes cultivating clinical thinking, provides effective clinical teaching, and continuously strengthens the professional foundation of young doctors.
The department has established a tiered talent-development system and values the growth of young backbones. It encourages medical and nursing staff to pursue further training away from the institution, builds platforms for external exchange, and regularly organizes professional study and skills training. It continuously optimizes the talent structure, works to build a geriatric-medicine team with a rational structure and outstanding expertise, and continuously improves the team’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities and service quality.
The department continuously strengthens medical quality and safety management, provides high-quality nursing services, implements individualized diagnosis and treatment, balances chronic-disease management, nutritional support, and functional maintenance, and values patients’ quality of life, contributing to protecting the health of the people of the island city.
