East Campus Obstetrics Department
The Obstetrics Department of the East Campus has built a high-caliber medical and nursing team of more than 100 members, with extensive clinical experience and outstanding professional expertise, dedicated to safeguarding the health of mothers and infants. The department currently has 33 medical and technical staff members, including 7 staff members with doctoral degrees and 26 with master’s degrees; personnel with advanced academic qualifications account for more than 90%. The department includes 9 chief physicians and 16 deputy chief physicians, and physicians with senior professional titles account for 76%. Its scientifically structured talent echelon enables it to provide pregnant and parturient women with full-cycle professional medical services, from routine prenatal examinations to the diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases. The department has 88 operational beds and approximately 5,000 deliveries annually, ranking first among tertiary general hospitals in Qingdao. It has an integrated outpatient service comprising an obstetric expert clinic, fetal heart monitoring center, postpartum rehabilitation clinic, school for expectant mothers, and genetic counseling; annual outpatient volume is approximately 100,000 visits. It has established a standardized, systematic maternal and infant health management service system covering the entire process before, during, and after pregnancy.
The department provides diagnostic and treatment services including preconception counseling, perinatal care, prenatal screening, genetic counseling, physiological obstetrics, pathological obstetrics, rescue of critically ill pregnant and parturient women, and postpartum rehabilitation. The discipline comprises four subspecialties: maternal–fetal medicine, pathological obstetrics, physiological obstetrics, and postpartum rehabilitation. The postpartum rehabilitation subspecialty includes distinctive programs such as comprehensive postpartum rehabilitation assessment and pelvic floor function testing and repair; each subspecialty has an independent diagnostic and treatment unit and a professional technical team. Overall technical strength is at the leading level within the province, and some technologies have reached an advanced national level.
As the Qingdao Municipal Center for the Treatment of Critically Ill Pregnant and Parturient Women, the department has successively been recognized as a “Characteristic Specialty of Maternal and Child Health Care of Shandong Province” and a “Key Discipline of Qingdao City.” It is a modern specialty integrating high-level medical care, research, and education, and its diagnosis and treatment of complex, difficult, and critical pregnancies complicated by comorbidities and complications is at an advanced national level. High-risk pregnancies account for 50% of the pregnant and parturient women hospitalized in the department, which has outstanding capabilities in managing difficult and critical cases; it has established a multidisciplinary emergency rescue system with coordinated MDT participation from anesthesiology, critical care medicine, cardiovascular medicine, neonatology, and other specialties, ensuring that critically ill pregnant and parturient women receive timely and precise treatment, with a rescue success rate exceeding 99%. The department undertakes regional treatment of critically ill pregnant and parturient women and receives critically ill pregnant and parturient women referred by medical institutions in Jimo and by Qingdao Women and Children’s Hospital. It receives more than 100 referred patients annually, with a safe referral rate of 100%, effectively improving the overall regional capacity for treating critically ill pregnant and parturient women. The department has significant technical advantages in procedures such as extraperitoneal cesarean section and complex cesarean section. Extraperitoneal cesarean section does not enter the peritoneal cavity and can effectively avoid abdominal contamination and adhesions, making it safer for high-risk patients with intrauterine infection, intra-abdominal adhesions, or repeat cesarean section; it also offers faster postoperative recovery and fewer complications. For complex cases such as placenta previa, placenta accreta, a scarred uterus, and multiple previous cesarean sections, the department has mastered a range of complex cesarean techniques and intraoperative hemostatic techniques, including B-Lynch suturing, intrauterine balloon tamponade, uterine artery/internal iliac artery ligation, and emergency hysterectomy; in collaboration with a multidisciplinary MDT, it provides precise management of life-threatening hemorrhage.
The department currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 2 master’s supervisors. It undertakes theoretical teaching and clinical supervision for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and standardized residency training. The department’s team leads and participates in multiple provincial- and municipal-level research projects, has published more than 200 papers in SCI-indexed and core journals in China and abroad, and has contributed to more than 30 medical monographs. Several department experts serve as members of academic organizations such as the Perinatal Medicine Branches of provincial and municipal medical associations. The department has hosted provincial- and municipal-level continuing medical education programs on multiple occasions, conducted academic exchanges and promoted grassroots technologies, and has received the Qingdao Science and Technology Progress Award multiple times.
The department is a joint doctoral and master’s graduate training base of Qingdao University and, at the same time, a master’s training site for China Rehabilitation University, Shandong Second Medical University, Dalian Medical University, and other higher-education institutions. It undertakes clinical practical training for doctoral and master’s students and undergraduate medical students. As a professional talent development platform, it receives obstetric medical and nursing personnel from medical institutions at all levels within and outside the province for further training. The department focuses on internal talent-echelon development, implements a young core personnel training program, encourages professionals to undertake advanced study outside the institution, and provides targeted training for subspecialists in maternal–fetal medicine, pathological obstetrics, physiological obstetrics, and postpartum rehabilitation. It also actively supports grassroots medical personnel, thereby improving the capabilities of the regional obstetric workforce.
The department is equipped with an independent modern obstetric operating room, delivery room, obstetric intensive care unit (MICU), obstetric ultrasound room, and prenatal diagnosis laboratory, providing one-stop closed-loop management for the care and treatment of pregnant and parturient women and ensuring efficient and safe diagnosis, treatment, and rescue. The department adheres to the service philosophy of “being mother-centered and taking maternal and infant safety as its guiding principle,” actively promotes vaginal birth, strictly controls the cesarean section rate, and works to create a warm, comfortable, and safe healthcare environment. With its excellent diagnostic and treatment technology and high-quality medical services, the department enjoys a strong reputation both within and outside the province, is deeply trusted by the public, and has achieved good social benefits.
