East Campus Neurosurgery Department

Our hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery has a history of more than 30 years, and the Brain Center—East Hospital Neurosurgery Department currently has 41 beds, 2 chief physicians, 10 doctors, 23 nurses, 3 staff members with master’s degrees and 4 with doctoral degrees among those with postgraduate or higher qualifications, and 4 deputy chief physicians. It has the most advanced 3.0 MRI in China, 64-slice CT, 3D-DSA, and other examination and diagnostic equipment for the nervous system. Surgical equipment includes a complete set of imported microsurgical instruments, a high-definition operating microscope, a high-speed drill, a neuroendoscope, and other advanced surgical equipment.

At present, the Department of Neurosurgery has developed three major specialty strengths: 1. Microsurgical treatment of intracranial tumors and skull-base tumors: Technically demanding operations such as transnasal pituitary adenoma resection, intracranial aneurysm clipping, and surgery for meningiomas, gliomas, skull-base tumors, and high-cervical spinal cord tumors are all performed proficiently, with good results, reaching an advanced level in China. 2. Interventional treatment of cerebrovascular diseases: Our department was the earliest specialty in Qingdao to carry out neurointervention. At present, the endovascular treatment group has carried out endovascular interventional treatment for various complex cerebrovascular diseases, including cerebral aneurysms, cerebrovascular malformations, internal carotid cavernous sinus fistulas, spinal cord vascular malformations, and tumor-vessel-directed chemotherapy, accumulating rich clinical experience, with treatment efficacy at a leading level in the province; 3. Functional neurosurgery: In this field, microvascular decompression operations for cranial nerves, such as those for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm, have been carried out; both surgical outcomes and the number of operations are at a leading level in Qingdao. At the same time, operations for epilepsy, spasmodic torticollis, and other conditions have been successfully performed. Surgical treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other functional neurosurgical diseases is also being prepared. In addition, our department has established standardized routines in the rescue and treatment of craniocerebral injuries, minimally invasive surgery for cerebral hemorrhage, and treatment of hydrocephalus. Our department’s “Minimally Invasive Surgical Treatment and Research of Cerebral Hemorrhage” is at an advanced level in China in both the number of cases and treatment efficacy. The “minimally invasive,” “keyhole,” and “neuroendoscopic” techniques currently used for intracranial tumors are closely following internationally advanced techniques, further reducing patients’ surgical trauma and improving treatment efficacy.

While performing its clinical work well, the Department of Neurosurgery has also achieved significant results in research. Over the past 5 years, it has published more than 30 papers in total, including 10 Zhonghua-level papers, and 7 monographs. At present, the department is undertaking 7 research projects at the national and Qingdao municipal levels, among which the 《Study of the Comprehensive Surgical Treatment Technology System for Stroke “Research on Hemorrhagic Stroke and Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy”》, in whose research our department participates, is a project under the National “11th Five-Year” Science and Technology Support Program. In addition, the completed project 《Basic and Clinical Research on Water-Sodium Metabolism Disorders after Hypothalamic Injury》 received the Second Prize of the 2009 Qingdao Science and Technology Progress Award. In recent years, it has also trained many graduate students specializing in neurosurgery. Our department will continue to leverage its team strengths, take science and technology as the core and service and treatment as the standard, and better relieve patients’ suffering. Create a first-class medical science and technology specialty and forge a discipline trusted by the people of Qingdao.
