Main Campus Nephrology Department
The Department of Nephrology at the Main Hospital of the Municipal Hospital was established in 1986. After 40 years of development, it has become a comprehensive department integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It is currently a Clinical Key Specialty of Shandong Province. Since 2004, it has been the affiliated institution of the Qingdao Hemodialysis/Nephrology Quality Control Center. The department consists of outpatient services, inpatient wards, and a blood purification center. The inpatient ward has 34 approved beds, one peritoneal dialysis treatment room, and one peritoneal dialysis clinic, with more than 2,000 discharged patients with kidney disease annually. The department currently has more than 50 medical and nursing staff members, including 12 physicians: 5 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, and 2 attending physicians; 2 master's supervisors; 3 physicians with doctoral degrees; and 8 with master's degrees.
The academic leader, Cui Yongjun, currently serves as the chairperson of the Hemopurification Branch of the Qingdao Medical Association and the Qingdao Nephrology Quality Control Center, among other positions. He was the first in the Shandong Peninsula region to perform a number of complex vascular access procedures, including basilic vein transposition–brachial artery arteriovenous fistula creation with second-stage superficialization, lower-extremity arteriovenous fistula creation, and Gracz fistula creation.
The department is being developed into a distinctive benchmark specialty in the Jiaodong Peninsula region. It currently has 57 hemodialysis machines, 2 bedside hemofiltration machines, 1 automated peritoneal dialysis machine, 2 blood gas analyzers, and 1 bedside ultrasound machine.
The Department of Nephrology at the Main Hospital is one of the earliest nephrology departments in Qingdao to perform renal biopsy, peritoneal dialysis, and hemodialysis. It has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of various primary glomerular diseases, including nephritis and nephrotic syndrome; tubulointerstitial diseases; secondary kidney diseases, including lupus nephritis, diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive nephropathy, and purpuric nephritis; and acute and chronic renal failure. It routinely performs renal biopsy, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion and removal, temporary and semi-permanent hemodialysis catheter placement, and various complex arteriovenous fistula procedures. The department's distinctive technologies include various blood purification procedures, including ultrasound-guided peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, transposition arteriovenous fistula creation, arteriovenous fistula PTA, arteriovenous fistula thrombectomy, vascular grafting plus arteriovenous fistula creation, ultrasound-guided flow restriction of arteriovenous fistulas, lower-extremity arteriovenous fistula creation, and Gracz fistula creation. In the management of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, it is a benchmark institution in Qingdao.
Hemodialysis: The department is one of the earliest institutions in Qingdao to initiate hemodialysis. It can perform nearly all blood purification modalities, including continuous renal replacement therapy, plasma exchange, hemoperfusion, immunoadsorption, and lipid apheresis. CRRT is widely used as an adjunctive treatment in the management of critically ill patients with renal and nonrenal diseases, including acute and chronic renal failure, heart failure, lupus nephritis, vasculitis, and rhabdomyolysis syndrome. For many years, our hospital's Blood Purification Center has served as the leading institution responsible for hemodialysis quality control in Qingdao.
Vascular access: Our department has gradually developed its own distinctive expertise in establishing vascular access. It can perform temporary and semi-permanent central venous catheter placement, standard arteriovenous fistula creation, high-position arteriovenous fistula creation, transposition arteriovenous fistula creation, arteriovenous fistula PTA, arteriovenous fistula thrombectomy, vascular grafting plus arteriovenous fistula creation, ultrasound-guided flow restriction of arteriovenous fistulas, and various other complex arteriovenous fistula procedures.
Peritoneal dialysis: Our department is one of the earliest institutions in Qingdao to initiate peritoneal dialysis treatment and was one of the earliest institutions nationwide to have more than 100 peritoneal dialysis patients at the beginning of this century. In recent years, it has conducted systematic research and made improvements in peritoneal dialysis catheter implantation, the development of individualized treatment plans, and quality management of home peritoneal dialysis. The department has dedicated peritoneal dialysis physicians and nurses and an independent peritoneal dialysis clinic.
Immune-mediated kidney diseases: Our department is one of the earliest institutions in Qingdao to perform renal biopsy. It can proficiently perform ultrasound-guided renal biopsy to rapidly establish pathological diagnoses for various types of kidney disease, particularly rare kidney diseases, and provide targeted treatment.
Our department has received 2 Third Prizes for Qingdao Science and Technology Progress, 2 Second Prizes and 5 Third Prizes for Hospital Science and Technology Progress. More than 10 inventions and utility model patents have been granted to members of the department by the National Intellectual Property Administration. In recent years, department members have published more than 100 papers as first or corresponding authors in core domestic and international journals, including multiple SCI-indexed papers, more than 40 papers in Chinese medical journals at the national level, and more than 30 papers in national-level journals. They have served as chief editors or contributing editors of more than 10 medical monographs.
Since 2003, our department has hosted, every year, continuing medical education programs at or above the provincial and municipal levels, including training courses on new advances in blood purification and/or workshops on the clinical application and new advances in peritoneal dialysis technology. It also holds the annual academic conference of the Hemopurification Branch of the Qingdao Medical Association.
The department serves as a master's student training base for Qingdao University, Weifang Medical University, Shandong First Medical University, Dalian Medical University, and other institutions. More than 20 master's students have been trained to date. The department undertakes the clinical teaching of undergraduate students in internal medicine from institutions of higher education, including the School of Medicine of Qingdao University and Ocean University of China; undertakes standardized residency training in Qingdao; and has internal medicine and general practice residents rotating through the department for study year-round. In recent years, it has accepted more than 100 visiting physicians and nurses from within and outside Shandong Province for further training.
Our department places great importance on developing and building a talent pipeline. It has dispatched physicians to renowned hospitals in Germany and the United States for further training on 5 occasions, and to Beijing and Shanghai on 7 occasions. The department emphasizes the development of young and mid-career physicians with balanced clinical and research expertise. It has 6 physicians with senior professional titles, 4 with associate senior professional titles, 3 master's supervisors, 1 recipient of the Qingdao Outstanding Academic Leader designation, and 2 recipients of the Qingdao Outstanding Young Medical Talent designation.
