Department of Radiation Oncology Physics and Technology
The Department of Tumor Radiotherapy Physics and Technology is the hospital’s core technical support department for tumor radiotherapy and has no inpatient beds. It currently has 22 professional and technical staff members, forming a well-structured multidisciplinary technical team: 2 associate chief technologists, 16 supervising technologists and supervising nurses, and 4 technologists and nurses; 1 PhD holder and 4 master’s degree holders. Its professional fields cover medical physics, oncology, radiation medicine, nuclear technology, medical imaging technology, and more. All core team members have undertaken further study and training at leading domestic cancer centers, possess solid theoretical foundations, and are capable of managing complex radiotherapy cases and applying comprehensive quality-control thinking.
The department is equipped with a complete set of internationally leading large-scale radiotherapy equipment: the U.S. Varian Trilogy and Swedish Elekta Axesse medical linear accelerators; Philips and Siemens large-bore CT simulation and localization scanners; Elekta Monaco and Varian Eclipse treatment planning systems, the IBA three-dimensional dose verification system, and other high-precision treatment-planning and dose quality-control equipment. Its hardware configuration is leading in the region.
Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment
The department undertakes full-process technical support for tumor radiotherapy throughout the hospital: CT simulation and localization for tumor patients, assistance with individualized radiotherapy target delineation, radiotherapy plan design, precise dose calculation, treatment-plan dose verification, implementation of image-guided radiotherapy, daily quality control and maintenance of radiotherapy equipment, and radiation-dose monitoring. It provides the physical and technical implementation of various radiotherapy techniques, including three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, and stereotactic radiotherapy, for malignant tumors in all parts of the body, ensuring the safe and precise delivery of radiotherapy.
Specialty Features/Technical Advantages
As the core technical hub of the hospital’s radiotherapy system, the department has established a full-process closed-loop radiotherapy quality-control system, achieving millimeter-level control of radiotherapy precision. It has mature capabilities in advanced precision radiotherapy techniques, including three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, image-guided radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and four-dimensional CT simulation and localization. The coordinated use of dual treatment-planning systems and accelerators from two brands enables the efficient management of complex tumor cases throughout the body. Relying on a comprehensive dose-verification platform, the department strictly implements radiotherapy dose verification, ensuring the delivery of individualized precision radiotherapy and providing reliable technical support for difficult and complex tumor radiotherapy.
Scientific Research and Teaching
The department actively conducts scientific research in medical physics and radiotherapy quality control, undertakes national-level research projects, publishes multiple papers in SCI-indexed and Chinese core journals, and has obtained multiple utility model patents. It undertakes teaching and internship supervision for medical imaging and medical physics programs at educational institutions, and provides standardized training in radiotherapy physics and quality control for colleagues within the hospital and across the region, promoting the standardized development of regional radiotherapy physics technology.
Talent Development
The department implements a tiered talent-development system and cultivates its team across multiple dimensions, including clinical technology, research innovation, quality and safety, and academic exchange. Key personnel are assigned to leading domestic cancer centers for further study and training; the team is encouraged to participate in domestic academic conferences and technical competitions, and supported in pursuing higher academic qualifications while employed. The department is building a medical physics talent team combining clinical and research capabilities and continuously developing a reserve of high-level radiotherapy physics and technology professionals.
The department continues to follow advances in radiotherapy, actively exploring the clinical translation and application of new technologies such as adaptive radiotherapy, Flash radiotherapy, and artificial-intelligence-based radiotherapy planning. It strictly implements radiation-protection management, balances treatment precision with radiation safety, adheres to quality and safety as its bottom line, and continuously optimizes radiotherapy workflows to provide tumor patients with safe, efficient, individualized precision radiation-therapy technical services.
