Main Campus Gynecology Department
The Department of Gynecology of the Main Campus of Qingdao Municipal Hospital is a comprehensive clinical department integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and preventive health care. It is a key clinical specialty in Shandong Province and a Category B key discipline in Qingdao. Through the hard work and unremitting efforts of generations of medical staff, the department has reached a leading level in Qingdao and even on the Jiaodong Peninsula in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological diseases, especially minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant gynecological tumors, earning deep trust from patients and recognition from peers. The Main Campus Gynecology Department currently has 30 open beds, 18 doctors, and 13 nurses, including 5 chief physicians and 6 deputy chief physicians, as well as 6 doctoral-degree holders and 10 master's-degree holders. The department uses subspecialty-based group management, covering gynecologic oncology, general gynecology, gynecologic endocrinology, female pelvic floor disorders, cervical diseases, and other areas. It has 5 laparoscopy systems, 10 hysteroscopy systems, 2 vascular sealing systems, 1 colposcopy device, a LEEP device, an argon knife, a carbon dioxide laser, and other diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Its annual outpatient volume exceeds 50,000 visits, its annual number of operations exceeds 2,000, and Grade III and IV operations account for more than 70%.
Minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and comprehensive treatment for benign and malignant gynecological tumors such as uterine fibroids, ovarian tumors, endometrial cancer, and cervical cancer; minimally invasive surgical treatment for endometriosis such as adenomyosis, ovarian chocolate cysts, and deep endometriotic nodules; diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of female pelvic floor functional disorders; comprehensive treatment and full-course management of gynecological endocrine diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, infertility, and perimenopausal syndrome; surgical and ablative treatment of precancerous lesions of the cervix, vagina, and vulva using cold-knife, LEEP, argon-knife, carbon dioxide laser, and other procedures.
The department's core strength is minimally invasive treatment of gynecological tumors, and it was the first on the Jiaodong Peninsula to carry out a number of highly difficult laparoscopic operations. Examples include: laparoscopic radical surgery for cervical cancer, fluorescence-guided laparoscopic comprehensive staging surgery for early ovarian cancer, neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, laparoscopic enucleation of giant uterine fibroids, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal total hysterectomy for a giant uterus, laparoscopic autologous-tissue repair of pelvic organ prolapse, and transvaginal repair of pelvic floor organ prolapse. Single-port laparoscopy has been used for the removal of benign tumors of the uterus and adnexa, with significant advantages including less trauma, concealed scars, and faster recovery. In hysteroscopy, the department can perform cold-knife or electrosurgical procedures for all types of complex intrauterine lesions, such as submucosal uterine fibroids and endometrial polyps, using cold-knife shaving to protect the endometrium and reproductive function of young women to the greatest extent. For young patients with adenomyosis and a greatly enlarged uterine body, the department was the first in Qingdao to carry out drug pretreatment combined with intrauterine suturing of the “levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system,” fulfilling patients’ wish to retain the uterus. The department has established a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment model (MDT) for gynecological malignancies, working with the departments of radiology, pathology, oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and nutrition to formulate individualized treatment plans, significantly improving the survival rates and quality of life of patients with malignant tumors.
In research, the department combines clinical and basic research, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of gynecological tumors, optimization of minimally invasive techniques, the pathogenesis of endometriosis, and basic and clinical research on pelvic floor rehabilitation. Over the past 5 years, it has undertaken 4 national-, provincial-, and municipal-level scientific research projects, received 1 municipal science and technology award, published more than 10 SCI papers, and obtained 4 invention patents. In teaching, the department serves as a master's student training site and a base for undergraduate internships and standardized residency training for institutions including Rehabilitation University, the School of Medicine of Qingdao University, Harbin Medical University, Dalian Medical University, and Shandong Second Medical University. It undertakes theoretical teaching, clinical observation, and internship supervision for students majoring in clinical medicine. It currently has 2 master's supervisors and has trained numerous master's students.
The department places great emphasis on developing a talent pipeline, periodically sending physicians of all levels outside the hospital for further training in specialized techniques, and regularly organizing departmental professional study sessions and case discussions, greatly improving its professional and technical capabilities. Each year, the department conducts 2 provincial- and municipal-level continuing education programs, promotes the overall improvement of regional gynecological technology, has received the hospital’s “Top Ten Party-Building Brand Departments” honor, and has successfully created the departmental cultural brand “Youthful Radiance, Red Charm, Guardianship Along the Medical Journey.”
