Main Campus Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Department
Our Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery was founded in 1948 by Dean Tian Zhen. Through the development and training carried out under successive department directors, the department has continued to grow stronger. It currently has 20 beds, 1 chief physician, 9 associate chief physicians, 3 supervisors of master's students, 2 staff members with doctoral degrees, and 5 with master's degrees; several staff members have also studied abroad.
It currently has a Stryker nasal endoscopic surgical system, a TPS power system, and a Medtronic power system; Danish audiometry and auditory brainstem evoked-potential equipment; the U.S. Jiesi plasma surgical system; a Leica operating microscope; outpatient imaging workstations; and other advanced equipment.
The diagnostic and treatment scope includes otology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck tumors, sleep disorders, and some esophageal and tracheal diseases. It covers the diagnosis and treatment of common, frequently occurring, and difficult or complex diseases in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery.
In addition to developing the department's traditional operations, it is continually expanding its surgical fields and directions of development, including surgical treatment of thyroid tumors, direct-vision endoscopic surgery for adenoid hypertrophy in children, endoscopic resection and midfacial degloving surgery for maxillary sinus cancer, microsurgery for vocal fold polyps and vocal fold nodules, laser treatment of laryngeal cancer, standardized diagnosis and treatment of positional vertigo, and intratympanic injection for Ménière's disease and sudden deafness, among other procedures.
In the fields of ear microsurgery and skull base surgery: our department has reached an advanced level within the province in modified radical mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty for various types of chronic suppurative otitis media, facial nerve decompression or nerve grafting and anastomosis for facial paralysis, and surgery for congenital malformations of the middle and external ear. It has developed new techniques including tumor resection at the petrous apex of the skull base via a labyrinthine approach, middle cranial fossa tumor resection via a subtemporal approach, maxillectomy and anterior skull base tumor resection via a modified midfacial degloving approach, and medical and surgical diagnosis and treatment of vestibular vertigo, with good results.
In the field of minimally invasive nasal surgery: the department performs endoscopic surgery of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. It has developed and accumulated extensive experience in correcting deviated nasal septum and treating sinusitis, nasal polyps, nasal cavity tumors, and other diseases, achieving good therapeutic results; it also performs endoscopic procedures related to nasal neurosurgery, such as endoscopic pituitary tumor surgery and repair of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, and naso-ocular surgery, such as endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy and optic nerve decompression, thereby establishing distinctive endoscopic nasal treatment supported by specialized minimally invasive techniques.
In the field of laryngology and head and neck surgery: the department performs diagnosis and microsurgical treatment of laryngeal diseases under electronic laryngoscopy, fiberoptic laryngoscopy, and suspension laryngoscopy. It has developed mature expertise in tonsillectomy and palatopharyngoplasty, minimally invasive surgery for voice disorders, functional neck dissection, partial laryngectomy, laryngoplasty and voice reconstruction for laryngeal cancer, total laryngectomy, surgery for hypopharyngeal cancer, and thyroid tumor resection. It also performs highly complex procedures, including reconstruction of laryngotracheal stenosis, reconstruction after head and neck tumor resection with skin or myocutaneous flaps, myocutaneous flap reconstruction with microvascular anastomosis, and resection of hypopharyngeal or cervical esophageal cancer followed by reconstruction of the hypopharynx or esophagus using the stomach, or reconstruction of the esophagus using the jejunum.
In the field of diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing: the department has introduced an advanced respiratory sleep monitoring system, providing a basis for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep apnea syndrome. According to disease grading and staging, it performs noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation with a ventilator. Surgical treatments include low-temperature radiofrequency ablation, palatopharyngoplasty, hyoid suspension, tongue-base suspension, and soft-palate advancement, with good clinical results.
In research, the department has obtained 6 national patents and undertaken more than 10 projects from the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, the Provincial Health Department, the Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, and the Health Bureau. It currently has 3 supervisors of master's students. It is an undergraduate teaching unit of Qingdao Medical College and Nanjing Medical University, and is also a master's student training unit of Qingdao University Medical College, Weifang Medical College, and Taishan Medical College. It has trained 15 master's students.
