Main Campus Neurology Department 1
The Brain Center of Qingdao Municipal Hospital is a discipline of the National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Project. As one of the constituent parts of the Brain Center, the First Department of Neurology of the main campus is a key discipline of the health sector of Shandong Province and Qingdao City. Having devoted itself to the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases for forty years, it has always taken “precision diagnosis and treatment, whole-course care” as its core positioning and provides high-quality medical services to patients from Qingdao and its surroundings, Northeast China, Northwest China and many other places.
I. Department scale
The department has 40 open beds and currently 34 medical and nursing staff, including 6 with senior professional titles (2 chief physicians and 4 associate chief physicians), 1 with an intermediate professional title and 1 with a junior professional title; all the remaining nursing staff possess solid specialty qualifications. Backbone members have been selected to receive further training at top international neurology centers in Germany, Australia, the United States, Japan and other countries, forming a talent team with an echelon structure linking senior, middle-aged and young members.
The department is equipped with a full set of advanced neuroelectrophysiological devices, including ambulatory electroencephalographs, conventional electroencephalographs, transcranial Doppler devices, electromyographs and sleep monitors, fully meeting the needs of precise clinical diagnosis and scientific research innovation. It serves more than 40,000 outpatient and emergency patients each year.
II. Scope of diagnosis and treatment
The department has established eight characteristic subspecialties, covering the full-cycle diagnosis and treatment of common diseases, difficult and rare diseases, and critical illnesses:
1. Neuromuscular and rare disease subspecialty: in cooperation with the neuro/muscle pathology and skin pathology testing platforms of Xiangya Hospital and Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, it has cumulatively diagnosed dozens of difficult and rare diseases, resolving the long-standing pain point of “difficulty in diagnosis”.
2. Sleep disorder subspecialty: targeting the high incidence of insomnia among adults, it adopts a multidisciplinary model of simultaneous treatment of body and mind, integrating medication, physical therapy and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine regimens, and customizes personalized sleep rehabilitation plans.
3. Cognitive disorder subspecialty: focusing on the needs of an aging population, it has established a whole-process system of early screening and early intervention, accumulated rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and effectively delays the progression of patients' conditions.
4. Cerebrovascular disease subspecialty: as the first unit in Qingdao to carry out ultra-early thrombolysis for acute cerebral infarction, it has created a full-chain management model of “pre-hospital education – acute-phase treatment – early rehabilitation – secondary prevention”; its stroke disability rate and recurrence rate are significantly lower than the regional average, making it a high ground for cerebrovascular disease diagnosis and treatment in the peninsula region.
5. Neuroimmunology and infection subspecialty: for neuroimmunological diseases it pursues a strategy of “early diagnosis and early treatment”, standardly applying techniques such as hormonal pulse therapy, intravenous immunoglobulin and plasma exchange in the acute phase, and taking the lead in introducing new targeted drugs such as FcRn receptor antagonists; the success rates of treatment for myasthenia gravis, autoimmune encephalitis and neuromyelitis optica rank among the top in the province; for the diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system infections it relies on cerebrospinal fluid plus imaging for precise localization, minimizing sequelae to the greatest extent.
6. Parkinson's disease subspecialty: it is the earliest-established Parkinson's diagnosis and treatment team in Qingdao with the most complete system, runs a dedicated disease clinic and, together with the Department of Neurosurgery, carries out deep brain stimulation surgery; its level of new drug application is in line with the domestic frontier.
7. Vertigo and headache subspecialty: it is the first unit in Qingdao to carry out manual repositioning for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, can precisely differentiate central from peripheral vertigo and identify early dizziness caused by high-risk cerebrovascular diseases and difficult rare diseases; it has established a standardized headache diagnosis and treatment pathway and a headache clinic, greatly reducing the rates of misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis.
8. Epilepsy subspecialty: its research on immune factors and the mechanisms of epilepsy is at the domestic leading level, and its cure rate ranks among the top nationwide; with a dedicated disease clinic plus an electrophysiology room, it routinely conducts multidisciplinary discussions and whole-course management of refractory epilepsy.
Routine diagnosis and treatment cover the full spectrum of diseases including cerebrovascular diseases, neuroimmunological diseases, central nervous system infections, neuromuscular diseases, sleep disorders, Parkinson's disease, cognitive disorders, epilepsy, headache and dizziness, and characteristic procedures such as neuromuscular biopsy can be performed.
III. Disciplinary features and technical advantages
The core advantages of the department are concentrated in three dimensions: the ability to treat acute and critical illnesses, the ability to diagnose difficult diseases, and the ability to provide precise treatment. Techniques such as control of the thrombolysis time window for acute cerebral infarction, pathological diagnosis of rare neurological diseases, neuroimmunological targeted therapy and comprehensive management of refractory epilepsy all reach the advanced level within the province and even the country. In recent years more than 10 new technologies have been introduced cumulatively, the related achievements have won 2 municipal science and technology progress awards, and patient satisfaction has remained above 98% for 5 consecutive years, achieving a dual improvement in social and economic benefits.
IV. Research and teaching
The department undertakes graduate training and clinical teaching tasks for universities including the Medical College of Qingdao University and Dalian Medical University, teaching more than one hundred interns and standardized residency trainees per year on average. In recent years it has led 5 provincial and municipal research projects, published more than 20 papers in SCI and core journals, and participated in 3 national multicenter clinical studies.
V. Talent development
A tiered training system has been established: young physicians work under a “mentorship system”, with senior experts providing one-to-one guidance on clinical skills; backbone physicians are selected as needed to receive subspecialty training at top institutions at home and abroad; all staff are encouraged to participate in academic exchanges, with more than 30 person-times sent each year on average to attend national and provincial academic conferences. At the same time, a “subspecialty leader” mechanism has been established to open up talent growth channels and ensure the sustainable development of each subspecialty.
