The diagnostic and treatment scope covers urological diseases, including: calculi, tumors, urinary continence and pelvic-floor diseases, andrology, transplantation, etc. Urological endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery has become a distinctive feature of the department and reached an advanced domestic level. Various procedures through natural passages are routinely performed, such as transurethral cystoscopic surgery and ureteroscopic and nephroscopic surgery. Transurethral resection of the prostate is a routine procedure; thousands of cases have been successfully performed. The segmental rotary, layer-by-layer resection technique has been promoted in more than 30 medical institutions in China and has reached internationally advanced and domestically leading levels. In recent years, transurethral holmium-laser enucleation of the prostate and high-power GreenLight laser vaporization have also been performed. Flexible and rigid ureteroscopes are skillfully combined with lasers to complete various lithotripsy, endourethrotomy, and tumor-enucleation procedures. Various laparoscopic operations are routinely performed, including laparoscopic resection of giant renal tumors and pheochromocytomas, nephron-sparing tumor resection, pyeloplasty, radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, and orthotopic continent neobladder reconstruction. In addition, several difficult and complex operations have been successfully performed, including management of giant renal cancer complicated by an inferior vena cava tumor thrombus, comprehensive treatment of advanced tumors, surgery for complex posterior urethral strictures, transurethral surgery in high-risk patients, and tension-free sling surgery for female stress urinary incontinence. These procedures have produced good results, reduced trauma, and shortened hospital stays, earning the trust of patients and their families. Patients from various parts of China have successively come for consultation or been transferred to our hospital for diagnosis and treatment.
Measures including recruitment, overseas dispatch, and on-the-job training are used to strengthen the research team and improve the overall quality of the academic team. Two doctors with doctoral degrees have been recruited, and 3 visiting scholars have been sent abroad. Training is conducted strictly in accordance with the guiding principles and teaching syllabus of the former State Education Commission for training master’s students, and the master’s training program of Qingdao University Medical College. Deputy chief physicians are regularly sent abroad for further study and to attend high-level specialized training courses in China, enabling them to master the latest developments in the specialty at home and abroad; the goal is to send 1–2 each year. Attending physicians and resident physicians are regularly sent to national-level hospitals in China for further study, so that they master advanced domestic developments and reach the advanced level of the specialty in comparable domestic hospitals. Every physician at each level who has graduated from a bachelor’s program is selected to undertake in-service doctoral study.
The department is currently a master’s training site for Qingdao University Medical College, Dalian Medical University, Weifang Medical University, and Taishan Medical University, and undertakes clinical teaching for Qingdao University Medical College, Dalian Medical University, Nanjing Medical University, Weifang Medical University, and several other medical schools.
