Specialty characteristics/technical advantages:
The vitreoretinal specialty is the strongest in the Jiaodong region. It has 2 members of the provincial fundus disease group, a well-structured talent echelon, and a detailed division of responsibilities. It possesses several large instruments that are at an advanced domestic level and is able to undertake and perform all vitreoretinal surgeries currently performed in China. Its main technical highlights include minimally invasive vitrectomy; complex and refractory vitreoretinal surgery; combined anterior- and posterior-segment surgery; photodynamic therapy and anti-VEGF drug injection treatment for all types of choroidal neovascular diseases;
The cataract specialty has the most advanced phacoemulsifiers, anterior segment analyzers, corneal topographers, and other high-end equipment in China. Its staffing structure is well balanced across older, middle-aged, and younger age groups, and it is proficient in performing all types of cataract surgery. Its surgical volume consistently ranks among the highest in the Jiaodong region, and it was also among the earliest in the province to complete the transition toward vision- and refractive-oriented cataract surgery. Its main technical highlights include microincision cataract phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation; premium options (multifocal, astigmatism-correcting); and individualized cataract surgery design.
Research, teaching, and talent development
The department has strong technical and professional capabilities. Every year, multiple groups of physicians attend national- and provincial-level academic conferences in this specialty and various training courses, enhancing each person’s professional competence, broadening their horizons, and enabling them to keep abreast of the latest developments in ophthalmology.
The Center has 2 supervisors for master’s students. More than 20 graduate students have graduated, and 7 graduate students are currently enrolled. The Center also undertakes clinical observation and internship training for undergraduate students of Qingdao University Medical College, as well as clinical observation for undergraduate students of Nanjing Medical University. The Center is also the only standardized physician training base and general practitioner training base in the ophthalmology community of Qingdao, providing favorable support for the development of young physicians. The Center attaches importance to scientific research and has introduced policies to support and reward research. More than 50 papers have been published in core journals at various levels, and 2 research projects are currently in progress.
Over nearly 100 years, a large number of highly respected experts and scholars with significant influence nationally and within the province have emerged, forming the ophthalmology discipline’s philosophy of “precision, professionalism, compassion, and diligence.” Since its establishment, the Center has inherited these fine traditions and adhered to the management philosophy of “fairness and impartiality,” creating a favorable platform for the development of every employee, advocating that employees treat every patient with sincerity and compassion, and working hard to build “an ophthalmology center with influence within the province and a leading position in the Jiaodong region.”
