East Campus Neurology Department 1
The First Department of Neurology of the East Campus was established in 2002 when the East Campus of Qingdao Municipal Hospital opened. It is a key department of Shandong Province and Qingdao City. It has 43 beds, 9 doctors (including 6 doctors with doctoral degrees, 3 chief physicians and 2 associate chief physicians) and 15 nurses.
The department has subspecialties in cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, neurointervention, neuroimmunology, headache and dizziness, and rare neurological diseases. It provides year-round diagnosis and treatment for common, frequent and difficult neurological diseases in Qingdao and surrounding areas, including prevention of cerebrovascular disease, acute-phase thrombolysis, interventional and rehabilitation therapy; management of immune diseases such as myasthenia gravis; epilepsy; extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson’s disease; central nervous-system infections; demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis; dementia; peripheral neuropathies such as Guillain–Barré syndrome; and headache, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety and depression.
The department has strong technical expertise. Its doctors have high educational and professional qualifications and clear specialization, with deep research and extensive practice from basic research through clinical neurology. Academic leader Chief Physician Wang Xin is chair of the Geriatric Neurology Branch of the Shandong Health and Senior-care Services Society and the Rare Diseases Branch of the Qingdao Medical Association. He has focused on cerebrovascular disease and has performed ultra-early thrombolysis for cerebral infarction for more than 20 years. He has also worked extensively on rare diseases, enabling timely diagnosis and effective treatment, and established specialty clinics for headache, dizziness and sleep disorders to standardize common-disease care. Chief Physician Li Dongmei, leader of the extrapyramidal-disease subspecialty, has long specialized in standardized treatment of Parkinson’s and related disorders and has undertaken several provincial and municipal research projects. The department has sent staff to learn advanced neurointervention techniques at home and abroad. In 2001 it was the first in Qingdao to introduce neurointervention, using intracranial and extracranial stent implantation to improve cerebral blood flow, save lives and reduce stroke. At present, Chief Physician Wang Haifeng, subspecialty leader, has treated many patients with highly difficult disease and severe stenosis of multiple vessels, achieving satisfactory immediate relief.
In research, the department undertakes and participates in numerous national, provincial and municipal projects, has published more than 10 monographs and nearly 20 SCI-indexed articles, more than 200 papers in national core journals, and has won nearly 20 provincial and municipal science-and-technology awards. In education, it trains undergraduates from Qingdao University Medical College, Ocean University of China Medical College, Dalian Medical University and Shandong Second Medical University, and graduate students from Rehabilitation University, Qingdao University Medical College, Nanjing Medical University and Dalian Medical University. More than 20 graduate students have been trained. It has repeatedly received Qingdao University teaching awards and honors for advanced departments and individuals.
