East Campus Nephrology Department
Qingdao Municipal Hospital's nephrology department was established in 1986. It is a Shandong provincial key clinical specialty, host unit for Qingdao's nephrology quality-control center and a master's degree training site. East Campus has 37 beds, two CRRT machines, 62 hemodialysis machines and seven automated peritoneal dialysis machines. Its 15 physicians comprise four chief, six associate chief, three attending and two resident physicians; there are 39 nurses and one full-time engineer. The department diagnoses and treats primary glomerular disease, secondary nephropathy, tubulointerstitial disease, urinary infections, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, inherited and rare kidney diseases, and complex or critical renal conditions. Kidney replacement services include hemodialysis, hemofiltration, hemoperfusion, plasma exchange/immunoadsorption and CRRT; peritoneal catheter placement, prescription adjustment and home follow-up; and dialysis adequacy and access complication management. Vascular access services include creation and maintenance of native and graft arteriovenous fistulas, temporary or long-term catheter insertion and functional assessment, and complication management. Peritoneal dialysis: the team performs ultrasound-guided percutaneous, open surgical and laparoscopic catheter placement, manages complications and provides individualized plans, structured home follow-up and patient education. Renal pathology and complex disease: it performs real-time ultrasound-guided kidney biopsy by a single operator. The hospital describes its pathology expertise as nationally advanced and lists diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy, lupus nephritis, vasculitic renal injury, tumor-associated kidney disease, hemolytic uremic syndrome, gout-related nephropathy and cholesterol crystal embolic nephropathy. It reports several national or international first diagnoses of complex conditions and early systematic research on Gitelman and Bartter syndromes, renal tubular acidosis and familial renal glycosuria. Hemodialysis: the hospital describes vascular access creation and maintenance as leading in Qingdao. Procedures include complex access surgery and DSA-guided balloon dilation and thrombectomy for arteriovenous fistula stenosis, and management of long-term catheter complications. The department teaches for Rehabilitation University, Qingdao University, Shandong First Medical University, Shandong Medical University, Shandong Second Medical University and Jining Medical University. It has led three general National Natural Science Foundation projects and published over 100 papers, including more than 40 indexed in SCI. Its blood purification center is a provincial specialty training base. It holds case discussions and technical training, teaches interns, residents and postgraduates, and encourages academic exchange and continuing education. Hospital page edited September 21, 2026.
