East Campus Cardiac Surgery Department 1
The Cardiac Disease Treatment Center of Qingdao Municipal Hospital (Group) is Qingdao’s first international medical center integrating collaborative treatment by cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, imaging and other related disciplines, and operating with advanced technical advantages and management models. The Cardiac Center’s Department of Cardiac Surgery is a key specialty in medicine and health in Shandong Province, a key discipline in medicine and health in Qingdao, and the Qingdao Cardiac Disease Treatment Center issued by the Qingdao Municipal Health Bureau. Since its establishment, the Cardiac Center has set its goal at an internationally advanced level, adhered to an unconventional, high-starting-point development model, and formed a medical team mainly composed of medical doctors and masters, with good cooperation and selfless dedication. At present, the Department of Cardiac Surgery performs more than 600 operations annually; the difficulty and quality of its operations have reached an advanced domestic level, and some operations have reached an internationally advanced level. Among these, annual coronary artery bypass grafting exceeds 300 cases, cardiac valve operations exceed 200 cases, and aortic operations exceed 80 cases, all ranking among the leading levels in Qingdao. It has now become one of the cardiac surgery departments with the highest level of adult cardiovascular surgical treatment in Shandong Province.
The Department of Cardiac Surgery has strong technical capabilities and advanced comprehensive facilities, including 2 cardiac-surgery operating rooms, 1 hybrid operating room, the currently most advanced laminar-flow monitoring room, and advanced equipment. It has 1 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine and 4 intra-aortic balloon pumps. There are currently 77 medical and nursing staff, including 15 doctors (3 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, 4 doctors with doctoral degrees, 11 with master’s degrees, 1 municipal-level top talent, and 3 master’s supervisors) and 62 nurses. The Department of Cardiac Surgery has 55 beds, with departments separately established at the Main Campus and East Campus.
Specialty Characteristics and Technical Advantages
The Cardiac Center’s Department of Cardiac Surgery enjoys a high reputation for coronary artery bypass surgery. It routinely performs minimally invasive off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting through a small thoracic incision, total arterial coronary revascularization, coronary artery bypass grafting in elderly patients, and minimally invasive hybrid procedures. It has also accumulated extensive clinical experience in emergency surgery for acute myocardial infarction complicated by shock and acute surgery for acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiac perforation. It was the first in Qingdao to successfully perform coronary artery bypass grafting for patients over 80 years old with coronary heart disease, as well as emergency and critical procedures for acute myocardial infarction and concomitant ventricular septal perforation. Using internationally advanced technologies, it was the first in Qingdao to routinely perform complex procedures for acute aortic dissection, including aortic arch replacement, MINI-ROOT surgery and DAVID surgery; treatment outcomes have reached a leading domestic level. Bentall surgery combined with mitral valve replacement and MINI-ROOT surgery for Marfan syndrome has filled a gap in Qingdao. Mitral valvuloplasty with artificial annuloplasty-ring implantation for severe mitral regurgitation, end-stage rheumatic heart disease with NYHA class IV cardiac function and a left ventricular end-diastolic diameter greater than 80 mm, repeat valve replacement for bioprosthetic valve degeneration, and emergency repeat valve replacement for paravalvular leakage after mitral valve replacement have reached a leading domestic level. OPCAB+MIDCAB surgery has reached an advanced domestic level. More than 600 various cardiac surgeries are completed annually, with a surgical success rate of 98.3%. The annual number of coronary artery bypass procedures and complex procedures involving the great vessels has risen to first place in the city. More than 30% of admitted patients are from outside the city. It has now become the largest comprehensive cardiac disease treatment center in the Jiaodong region, with continuously increasing medical service coverage, and will provide high-quality medical services to cardiovascular patients in a wider area.
Discipline Development
The Department of Cardiac Surgery is a clinical key specialty in Shandong Province and has achieved remarkable results in subspecialty development. It is divided into 3 subspecialties:
1. Coronary heart disease: The incidence of coronary heart disease is increasing day by day, and its proportion in cardiac surgery is becoming greater. The number of critically ill patients who are elderly or have multiple comorbidities is also increasing. The establishment of the Chest Pain Center and the cardiovascular emergency department has enabled timely and accurate diagnosis, screening and appropriate triage of patients with coronary heart disease. The Department of Cardiac Surgery can skillfully perform and manage after surgery coronary artery bypass grafting without cardiopulmonary bypass and with cardiopulmonary bypass support, and actively performs coronary artery bypass grafting through a small left intercostal incision, bilateral internal mammary artery bypass grafting, hybrid surgery, and the application and related management of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP).
2. Great-vessel disease: Aortic dissection has an acute onset, rapid progression, high short-term mortality, long operation times, major trauma and many complications. Following the principle of early diagnosis and early treatment, this subspecialty works jointly with emergency, imaging and surgical departments and has achieved a time from diagnosis to surgery of within 1 hour. It can skillfully perform ascending aortic replacement, Bentall procedures, aortic arch replacement, Sun’s procedure, David procedure, Yacoub procedure, debranching procedures, and endovascular exclusion of the thoracoabdominal aorta with covered stents under DSA.
3. Valvular heart disease: Cardiac valve replacement is now routinely performed. The department has accumulated extensive experience in cardiac valve repair, especially rheumatic valve repair, and in treating severe valvular disease. TAVI has now been successfully performed, with a 100% success rate, providing patients with high-risk aortic stenosis an internationally advanced treatment option and improving their prognosis.
Cooperation and Exchange, Research and Teaching
Our hospital signed a technical cooperation agreement with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada in March 2012 and jointly established the “Qingdao University of Ottawa Heart Hospital” project. Well-known cardiac medical and surgical experts from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada are invited to guide the work of our Cardiac Center every year. Remote consultations and on-site case discussions are also conducted every month to promptly resolve difficult clinical cases. Since 2013, young and middle-aged physicians have been assigned to Canada for clinical physician training. The Department of Cardiac Surgery is now a postgraduate training site for Qingdao University Medical College, Dalian Medical University, Nanjing Medical University, Taishan Medical University and Weifang Medical University. It has trained more than 10 postgraduate students, published dozens of papers in core journals and multiple SCI articles, and currently holds multiple research projects of the Shandong Provincial Health Department and Qingdao Municipal Health Commission. It has received commendations from the hospital and higher-level departments many times.
