East Campus Blood Purification Center

The Blood Purification Center of Qingdao Municipal Hospital was established in 1978. It developed from the Artificial Kidney Unit and is a first-level clinical department. It was the earliest unit in Shandong Province to carry out hemodialysis treatment. At present, the Center covers 2,200 square meters and operates simultaneously at the eastern and western campuses. It has 56 blood purification machines and ranks first in Shandong Province in terms of scale. The Center comprises four departments: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, clinical laboratory, and equipment maintenance. It currently has 35 staff members, including 5 physicians, 28 nurses, 1 technician, and 1 engineer. All physicians have at least a university bachelor’s degree, and 40% have postgraduate education; among them are 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, 1 attending physician, and 1 resident physician. Among the nurses, 31% have bachelor’s degrees and 65.5% have junior-college degrees; they include 1 associate chief nurse and 14 charge nurses.

The Center is currently able to provide all blood purification procedures that are already carried out in China, including hemodialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, plasma exchange, hemoperfusion, immunoadsorption, continuous blood purification therapy, blood component separation, blood lipid separation, peritoneal dialysis, ascites reinfusion, and artificial liver support therapy. These comprise 12 categories and more than 40 treatment programs. It is the institution in China offering the most comprehensive range of blood purification programs.

In addition to routinely treating patients with acute and chronic renal failure (uremia), the Blood Purification Center has accumulated extensive clinical experience in rescuing patients with severe systemic lupus, lupus encephalopathy, severe Guillain–Barré syndrome, autoimmune vasculitis, Goodpasture syndrome, myasthenia gravis, multiple organ failure, and severe poisoning caused by drugs or poisons. At our hospital, continuous blood purification therapy has become a routine treatment modality for rescuing patients with multiple organ failure, markedly increasing the rescue success rate among critically ill patients.

In recent years, the Blood Purification Center has used artificial liver support therapy to gain valuable treatment time for many patients with severe liver disease and improve the treatment success rate. The use of blood component separation technology as an adjunctive treatment for hematological diseases, hyperlipidemia, severe psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other autoimmune diseases has produced good clinical results. The Center has also successively introduced and implemented a number of new treatment technologies, including autologous stem-cell separation and activation, endotoxin and cytokine removal, and removal of autoantibodies and viruses, opening up new treatment approaches for many diseases previously considered untreatable.

In peritoneal dialysis treatment, the Blood Purification Center of Qingdao Municipal Hospital has certain technical advantages and distinctive medical features. This work was initiated earliest in Shandong Province. At present, the number of patients receiving treatment is the largest in the province, and the longest survival time has exceeded 12 years. The Center has conducted systematic research and made improvements in peritoneal dialysis catheter implantation surgery, individualized treatment plans, and quality management of home treatment. It developed the “Peritoneal Dialysis Support Abdominal Belt,” which has produced good clinical results in catheter fixation, reducing the incidence of peritonitis, and increasing patient adherence to treatment. It obtained a national utility model patent. Overall, its treatment level is among the leading levels in China, and it has achieved a certain degree of renown and influence.

To improve service quality and establish a sustainable healthcare service system, the Blood Purification Center, based on the medical characteristics of its specialty, created a department-specific service brand—“Kidney Friends’ Home.” The brand advertising slogan is: “Honesty and trustworthiness, sensitivity and speed, wholehearted work, and leading by example”; the brand service philosophy is: “Warm service, caring for life”; and the department’s work philosophy is: “Integrity and rigor, quality above all.”

The Blood Purification Center is an affiliated institution of the Qingdao Blood Purification Quality Control Center. With the support of the quality-control management system, the Center has established comprehensive rules and regulations, quality standards, and operating procedures. Adhering to the service principle that quality comes first, the Center continuously provides professional technical training for its staff, carries out continuous quality improvement, refines work processes, and strengthens health education. It has achieved good social benefits and earned the trust of patients and their families. In 2006, it was recognized as a specialty department with distinctive characteristics in Qingdao’s health sector. It subsequently received honors including “Qingdao Women’s Civilization Post” and “Outstanding Service Brand Department of the Qingdao Municipal Health Bureau,” among others.
