Endocrinology
Qingdao Municipal Hospital (Group) Endocrinology Center integrates medical care, teaching, and scientific research, and serves as Qingdao’s municipal-level center for endocrinology-related medical care, teaching, and scientific research. It is a Shandong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty and has been consecutively rated a Category B key discipline in medical and health care in Qingdao for many years. The Center has a complete range of subspecialties, a well-structured talent profile, and strong overall capabilities. Wards are located separately at the Main Campus and East Campus, with a total of 52 beds. The discipline team is appropriately structured and comprises more than 40 medical and nursing staff, including 5 chief physicians, 14 associate chief physicians, 6 staff members with doctoral degrees, 25 with master’s degrees, 1 Qingdao Outstanding Academic Leader, and 2 supervisors of master’s students. The Center has advanced hardware and software supporting the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine and metabolic diseases, including a dual-C system for continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps, a Canon fundus camera, ultrasound equipment for ultrasound-guided thyroid puncture, a quantitative sensory testing instrument, a body composition analyzer, and a hospital-wide blood glucose management system.
Subspecialty outpatient clinics are available at the East Campus, Main Campus, and West Campus. It is one of Qingdao’s largest endocrinology disciplines. Expert outpatient clinics are available for subspecialties including diabetes, weight management, diabetic foot disease, gout, osteoporosis, and thyroid diseases (thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy and thyroid diseases in pregnancy). Annual outpatient and emergency visits exceed 90,000, and annual discharges exceed 2,000.
The Center has consistently adhered to the development strategy of “medical care as the foundation, using key points to drive overall development, and revitalizing the discipline through medical education and scientific research.” In recent years, for various endocrine diseases, it has followed international frontiers, continuously introduced new technologies, and, in light of the department’s actual circumstances, gradually developed distinctive specialty services. The department has well-developed capabilities for rescuing patients with critical and severe endocrine emergencies and can rapidly identify emergencies such as diabetic ketosis, hyperosmolar states, severe hypoglycemia, thyroid storm, adrenal and pituitary crises, and severe electrolyte disturbances. It is proficient in carrying out emergency hormonal treatment, the standardized use of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring, correction of the internal milieu, and other resuscitation procedures, while strengthening monitoring of vital signs and organ function. Emergency supplies are complete and procedures are well established; joint treatment is conducted through multidisciplinary collaboration, emergency training and case reviews are implemented, and the level of care for critical and severe emergencies is continuously and continually improved. In 2019, under the guidance of the Qingdao Municipal Health Commission, the “Diabetic Foot Diagnosis and Treatment Center” was established; in 2025, under the guidance of the Shandong Provincial Health Commission, the “Healthy Weight Management Center” was established. With the support of these two centers, the Center integrates the advantages of multidisciplinary resources, builds a multidimensional diagnosis and treatment network for diabetes and weight management, and has formed a service chain encompassing prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment and management, and later rehabilitation follow-up, providing personalized and full-cycle health management for the people of the island city and the Peninsula region.
The Center undertakes more than 10 national-, provincial-, and municipal-level scientific research projects, has received one Shandong Provincial Medical Science and Technology Award and several third prizes of the Qingdao Science and Technology Progress Award, has published more than 20 SCl papers and more than 40 papers in Chinese core journals, has participated in compiling 5 books and national-level textbooks, and holds 1 national invention patent and 4 utility model patents. Each year, it undertakes undergraduate teaching, standardized postgraduate training, and supervision of trainees from surrounding primary-level medical institutions studying under further-training programs for numerous medical colleges and universities, including Rehabilitation University, the Medical School of Qingdao University, Shandong First Medical University, and Shandong Second Medical University. It has undertaken national physician licensing examination invigilation work for nearly 30 years.
Every year, it sends medical and nursing personnel to Peking University Hospital, the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army, Ruijin Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, and other well-known domestic medical institutions for further study; it also has young and middle-aged medical experts dispatched to top international medical research institutions, including Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the United States and Houston Methodist Medical Center, for study.
