East Campus Minimally Invasive Interventional Treatment Center
Interventional services at Qingdao Municipal Hospital began in the 1980s, making it one of the earliest hospitals to carry out interventional work. The Department of Interventional Radiology was established in 1991, became an independent department in 1997, and was designated as a first-level department. It is now the largest specialty for minimally invasive interventional treatment among municipal hospitals. The Center’s interventional operating rooms are equipped with 5 large digital subtraction angiography machines, and the Center has 6 catheterization rooms and 1 hybrid operating room. The Center can perform interventional procedures at all levels listed in the surgical catalog of the National Health Commission. The interventional operating rooms undertake nearly 10,000 various interventional procedures each year.
In September 2019, the Center recruited Jia Nan, a nationally renowned expert in minimally invasive interventional treatment, as its director. The newly established East Campus Minimally Invasive Interventional Treatment Center includes a specialty outpatient clinic, a ward, and interventional operating rooms. Closely following the main theme of the hospital’s high-quality development, it leverages its own strengths and focuses on developing vascular medicine as a distinctive specialty. The discipline has achieved five transformations: specialization of diagnostic and treatment services, dedicated zoning for patient admission, precision in diagnostic etiological investigation, precision in one-stop treatment, and refinement of minimally invasive interventional surgery.
The principle of “patient-centered care” is fully implemented. To facilitate patient visits, on the basis of specialty disease outpatient clinics for peripheral vascular disease, refractory hypertension, diabetic foot, and other conditions, the Center has internally established a vascular disease specialty, a hypertension specialty, a diabetic foot specialty, and a comprehensive interventional specialty. The ward has undergone corresponding specialized functional zoning, with efforts being made to develop the department into a one-stop diagnosis and treatment demonstration base for complex diseases in vascular medicine and geriatric medicine.
Director Jia Nan has led the team in carrying forward the technical expertise of Beijing Fuwai Hospital and the experience of Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, and has become one of the leading experts in the field of interventional treatment of hypertension in China. Since 2009, he has conducted research on renal denervation interventional treatment of hypertension (RDN). Beginning in 2011, representing Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, he explained the latest advances in RDN technology at multiple national-level academic societies. In 2013, he participated in performing Ruijin Hospital’s first RDN procedure. In view of Director Jia Nan’s profound expertise in the field of RDN, he was invited by the Chinese Hypertension League in 2022 to become a contributing author for the chapter on device-based treatment of hypertension (including RDN) in the 2023 edition of the Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension. In 2023, he was elected an executive council member of the Chinese Hypertension League and deputy secretary-general of the Professional Committee on RDN Treatment of Hypertension. He participated as a lecturer in the first national training course on standardized implementation of RDN, and subsequently delivered academic lectures at training courses and RDN-related conferences held in many parts of the country. He has become a nationally renowned expert in RDN technical guidance.
The department’s technical level in bilateral adrenal venous sampling, adrenal ablation for interventional treatment of hypertension, interventional treatment of renovascular hypertension, and other fields is at the leading level in China and the strongest in Shandong Province.
Director Jia Nan has been engaged in vascular interventional treatment since 2005 and has extensive experience in interventional procedures. He is particularly skilled in refined minimally invasive interventional treatment of complex arteriovenous diseases, with surgical success rates and complication control rates both reaching internationally advanced levels. Director Jia Nan was elected a council member of the Asia-Pacific Vascular Academic Alliance and deputy chairperson of the Peripheral Artery Disease Branch of the China Association for Promotion of International Medical and Healthcare Exchange.
Since 2014, the team has carried forward the West China model and conducted one-stop comprehensive treatment of diabetic foot. Based on sophisticated interventional recanalization techniques for occluded lower-extremity arteries, together with refined debridement treatment and scientific wound repair, the limb-salvage rate has reached an internationally advanced level, enabling many critically ill patients to avoid amputation and allowing ulcers to heal. The department has been designated the Diabetic Foot Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Qingdao Municipal Hospital. Director Jia Nan was elected chairperson of the Multidisciplinary Joint Professional Committee on Diabetic Foot and Chronic Wounds of the Qingdao Medical Association.
