East Campus Cardiac Ultrasound Department
The Department of Cardiac Ultrasound of Qingdao Municipal Hospital East Campus was established in March 2016 and is one of the largest specialized cardiac ultrasound diagnostic departments in our city. The department has accumulated extensive experience in the ultrasound diagnosis of common cardiovascular diseases and complex congenital heart disease, and also undertakes consultations for difficult and critically ill cases from surrounding areas and primary-level hospitals.
The department currently has 7 physicians, including 1 with a full senior professional title, 1 Doctor of Medicine, and 5 master's degree holders. It has 8 color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic systems, including 5 high-end tabletop systems and 3 portable systems. As a new department established more than 3 years ago, the department's annual examination volume has gradually increased, reaching nearly 50,000 examinations in 2019, including bedside examinations of critically ill patients, as well as real-time monitoring and assessment with transesophageal cardiac ultrasound during surgical operations and interventional procedures. The department works closely with clinical departments and has launched a series of new projects and technologies, including: three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography; right-heart contrast echocardiography; left-heart contrast echocardiography; transesophageal cardiac ultrasound guidance during left atrial appendage occlusion; transesophageal cardiac ultrasound guidance during transcatheter aortic valve implantation; cardiac resynchronization analysis using echocardiography and new technologies and ultrasound-guided parameter optimization after CRT; electrophysiological adjustment of patients with implanted pacemakers using echocardiography in combination with pacemaker programming; and ultrasound monitoring of interventional treatment for congenital heart disease, etc. The application of the above new technologies has achieved significant clinical results.
The department director and academic leader, Dai Hongyan, female, Doctor of Medicine, chief physician, master's supervisor, is also director of Department of Health Care 4 of Qingdao Municipal Hospital East Campus, director of the East Campus Department of Cardiac Ultrasound, and deputy director of the Department of Cardiology. She has engaged in clinical work in cardiology for more than 20 years and specializes in the drug treatment of common cardiology diseases and acute and critical illnesses. Throughout 2015, she participated in cardiac ultrasound fellowship training at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada, became proficient in transthoracic and transesophageal ultrasound diagnosis of various heart diseases, and obtained the American ARDMS cardiac ultrasound qualification certificate. In March 2017, she went to the Texas Heart Institute in the United States for advanced study. She led 1 National Natural Science Foundation project and 5 Qingdao municipal-level and bureau-level projects, and published 8 SCI papers as first or corresponding author and more than 10 papers in national core journals. She received the titles of “Outstanding Young Medical Talent” and “Outstanding Academic Leader” from the Qingdao Health and Family Planning Commission, and won 1 second prize for scientific and technological progress of Shandong Province and 3 third prizes for scientific and technological progress of Qingdao. She also serves as a member and secretary-general of the Cardiovascular Disease Branch of the Qingdao Medical Association, deputy chair of its Youth Committee, and a member of the Ultrasound Branch of the Shandong Medical Association.
The department places great importance on scientific research and talent development. Under the leadership and responsibility of Director Dai Hongyan, physicians at all levels in the department combine clinical practice to learn and master the basic methods of scientific research, and conduct research and summaries on ultrasound interventional treatment, the integration and application of echocardiography and cardiac pathophysiology, and the application of echocardiography and new technologies in cardiac resynchronization therapy. They actively apply for research projects, collect clinical data, compile research results, and write academic papers. In terms of talent development, physicians are assigned in rotation to cardiovascular specialty hospitals in Beijing and other places for further study, and all doctors take turns participating in various professional training courses, such as transesophageal cardiac ultrasound training courses, greatly improving their professional competence.
