Qilu Hospital of Shandong University

The Department of Stomatology at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University was founded in 1927 and, after nearly a century of the unremitting efforts of several generations, has now developed into a comprehensive specialty department integrating clinical care, teaching, and scientific research.

The Department of Stomatology is a key specialty in Shandong Province and has strong technical capabilities and advanced medical equipment. It currently has 8 professors and 17 associate professors, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 8 master's supervisors. The department's Central Campus has 52 beds and 40 comprehensive dental treatment chairs, while its Qingdao Campus has 20 beds and 16 comprehensive dental treatment chairs. The department has specialties including oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, implant dentistry, and oral radiology, among others, and possesses advanced equipment such as dental cone-beam computed tomography equipment (CBCT), a digital panoramic radiography unit, a digital endodontic microscope, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing equipment (CAD/CAM) for dentistry, a chairside digital 3D-printing system, and a maxillofacial bone power system. In the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial tumors, tissue-flap transplantation, staged treatment of cleft lip and palate, and temporomandibular joint surgery, it has consistently been at the forefront within the province. The modified cleft-palate repair operation—the velopharyngeal cerclage—is an international first. In recent years, it has reached an advanced national level in the reconstruction and treatment of maxillofacial deformities, combined cranio-maxillofacial radical surgery, orthognathic surgery, treatment of temporomandibular joint diseases, and treatment of hemangiomas and vascular malformations. As one of the earliest designated units of Smile Train in China, the Department of Stomatology has performed surgery on nearly 10,000 patients with cleft lip and palate; the treatment outcomes have reached an internationally advanced level, and in 2015 Smile Train awarded it the title of “World Leader in Cleft Care (GLOBAL LEADER IN CLEFT CARE)”.

The Department of Oral Medicine has four subspecialties: diseases of the dental hard tissues and pulp, periodontal diseases, pediatric dental diseases, and oral mucosal diseases. It mainly provides treatment for dental hard-tissue and pulp diseases such as dental caries, pulp diseases, and periapical diseases; minimally invasive restorations; microscopic root canal treatment; CAD/CAM chairside digital dental restorations; whitening treatment for fluorotic teeth and tetracycline-stained teeth; comprehensive treatment of periodontal diseases; treatment of pediatric dental diseases and early intervention for malocclusion; and diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal diseases. Treatment outcomes have reached an advanced national level.

In prosthodontics and orthodontics, artificial biomaterials are used to make various devices, appliances, or prostheses to restore, reconstruct, or correct patients’ various congenital deformities, acquired defects, or abnormalities of the oral and maxillofacial system, bringing it to a normal level. It mainly carries out restorative treatment of dental hard-tissue defects or deformities and prosthetic treatment of dentition defects using fixed or removable prosthetic techniques; restorative treatment of maxillofacial defects and deformities using maxillofacial prosthetic techniques; and prevention and restorative treatment of periodontal diseases and temporomandibular joint diseases, among others. For patients with malocclusion, it widely performs a variety of fixed orthodontic techniques, including the standard edgewise appliance, various straight-wire appliances, and functional appliances.

The Department of Stomatology undertakes the training of undergraduates, graduate students, and doctoral students; to date, it has trained more than 10 postdoctoral fellows, more than 20 doctoral students, and dozens of master's students. In addition, the Department of Stomatology has successively accepted more than 200 trainees from within and outside the province to study in the department, training a large number of personnel for primary-level hospitals. Qilu Hospital is the lead institution of the quality-control group for standardized residency training in Shandong Province and has successively accepted nearly 100 residents trained by social organizations and entrusted institutions.

As a national clinical pharmacology trial base, our department has completed multiple clinical trials of drugs and clinical trials of implant dentures. With its high degree of standardization and rigor, as well as the excellence of the trial results, it has received high praise from relevant departments and the industry.
