Organ Transplantation
The Organ Transplantation Center of Shandong University Qilu Hospital was established in September 2011 and renamed the Department of Organ Transplantation in December 2020. It currently focuses mainly on clinical and research work in liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, and hepatobiliary surgery. The liver transplantation specialty has completed more than 200 liver transplantations, with a high transplantation success rate and a mature perioperative management system, and has generated good social benefits. The hepatobiliary surgery specialty features standardized treatment centered on laparoscopic minimally invasive liver surgery. It can perform laparoscopically all types of liver surgery, including hemihepatectomy, anatomical liver segment resection, caudate lobectomy, and associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS), and was the first in the province to undertake high-difficulty procedures such as laparoscopic radical resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma and laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy. The discipline took the lead nationwide in performing selective hepatic hilar occlusion hepatectomy and was the first to apply selective portal vein embolization (PVE) to hemihepatectomy. It has accumulated extensive diagnostic and therapeutic experience in difficult hepatectomies and is actively carrying out translational and adjuvant treatments centered on interventional treatment of liver cancer combined with targeted therapy and immunotherapy. The department performs more than 900 hepatobiliary and pancreatic operations and interventional treatments annually; the laparoscopic rate for liver surgery exceeds 40%, forming a comprehensive, standardized hepatobiliary disease diagnosis and treatment center integrating liver transplantation, minimally invasive surgery, interventional therapy, and systemic therapy.
Kidney transplantation at our hospital began in 1978, making it one of the earliest institutions in the province to perform kidney transplantation, although the number of transplants was initially very small. Under the leadership of Professor Tian Jun, the number began to increase in 2002, and more than 1,100 kidney transplantations have been completed cumulatively. Our hospital has the highest kidney transplantation success rate in the province; among patients who underwent kidney transplantation during the past 5 years, follow-up has shown a transplanted-kidney success rate of 80–90%. In recent years, the department has continually broken through age-related restrictions on kidney transplantation, performing the kidney transplantation that was, at the time, in the lightest 4-year-old child in China (13 kg), the kidney transplantation in the oldest patient in the province (74 years), and, in 2018, the first intestinal-drainage combined pancreas–kidney transplantation in the province using an iliac artery bypass; all were successful. It has the province’s first Terasaki internationally certified transplant-matching laboratory. The department undertakes standardized residency training and teaches the graduate elective course 《Organ Transplantation》. Our department is the chair unit of the Organ Transplant Physicians Branch of the Shandong Medical Doctors Association. It undertakes several National and Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects and several provincial scientific and technological research projects, has received one Shandong Medical Science and Technology Award, and has published dozens of SCI articles; its academic standing ranks among the highest in the province.
The department director and academic leader is Professor Jin Bin, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, medical postdoctoral fellow, Shandong Qilu Health and Wellness Leading Talent, and Qilu Medical College Distinguished Young Physician. He studied under Academician Wang Xuehao, a renowned Chinese liver transplantation expert and founder of living-donor liver transplantation, and has independently completed more than 2,000 liver transplantation and liver resection procedures. Each year, he performs more than 700 major and medium-sized general surgery operations inside and outside the hospital. He has personally completed more than 1,200 laparoscopic liver resections and promoted laparoscopic liver resection at nearly 100 hospitals inside and outside the province. He led the development of the 《2019 Expert Consensus on the Application of Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Staining in Laparoscopic Liver Resection》. His personally developed “seven-step standardized laparoscopic liver resection” model has been presented and promoted at multiple high-level academic conferences in China. He has published more than 50 papers, including more than 20 indexed in SCI, with a cumulative impact factor exceeding 50 points; he has received one third prize of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and one first prize from the Provincial Department of Education. He currently undertakes 1 National Natural Science Foundation project and 5 provincial-level projects, with research funding exceeding 1.6 million yuan.
