Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation Oncology of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University is an important component of the Cancer Treatment Research Center. The Center was established in May 1996 and was one of the earliest comprehensive hospital cancer centers established in China. Since its establishment, it has received strong support from the Ministry of Health and leaders at all levels. All staff have undergone systematic professional training, and the Center has maintained good cooperative relationships with numerous hospitals in China and abroad for many years. The Department of Radiation Oncology has now become an important department with comprehensive facilities, advanced equipment, and standardized treatment, and its comprehensive diagnostic and treatment capabilities have reached an advanced domestic level.
The Department of Radiation Oncology has an outpatient radiotherapy unit and radiotherapy wards, comprising four wards (Central 2, Central 3, General 3, and the East Campus), with more than 160 beds. It includes a linear accelerator treatment room, a simulation and positioning room, a radiation physics room, a maintenance and engineering room, a phantom room, a brachytherapy afterloading room, and other departments. The department currently has 127 staff members, including 47 physicians, 25 technical staff members such as physicists, engineers, and technicians, and 55 nursing staff members. Among the physicians, 9 are professors (chief physicians) and 10 are associate professors (deputy chief physicians); 2 are doctoral supervisors and 6 are master’s supervisors. Twenty-four hold doctoral degrees, and 3 obtained doctoral degrees abroad. The department has 1 technician with an associate senior professional title and 1 nurse with an associate senior professional title.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is equipped with a large-bore CT simulator; a US TOMO THERAPY accelerator; a US VARIAN 23EX linear accelerator; a German Siemens PRIMUS K linear accelerator; a Dutch Microselectron-HDR high-dose-rate afterloading brachytherapy unit; and several domestically leading treatment planning systems, including CMS, ADAC, Plato, and Eclipse. In addition to conventional radiotherapy, the department provides specialized radiotherapy services, including IGRT, IMRT, TOMO, stereotactic conformal radiotherapy for tumors, X-knife treatment for cranial tumors, brachytherapy afterloading, three-dimensional radioactive seed implantation, radiofrequency ablation, hyperfractionated radiotherapy, and radiotherapy for benign diseases. It can provide standardized radiotherapy and comprehensive treatment for various malignant tumors and benign lesions. The department has received numerous honors, including the First Prize for New Technologies of Qilu Hospital and the Second Prize for Successful Rescue of Difficult and Critical Cases of Qilu Hospital. It has led and participated in numerous domestic multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind large-scale clinical trials, accumulating extensive experience and achieving major results, and has had a significant influence in the fields of oncology in China and internationally.
The Department of Radiation Oncology undertakes teaching tasks for Shandong University and other schools. It is a doctoral training site of Shandong University and has trained more than 100 master’s and doctoral students. These outstanding graduates have taken up various positions worldwide, where their rigorous, down-to-earth work style and dedicated spirit of striving for excellence have received unanimous praise from their institutions. As the lead institution for the standardized training of residents in radiation oncology in Shandong Province, the department undertakes the important responsibilities of serving as a standardized training base and assessment base for the specialty. It has successfully organized 3 completion examinations, trained more than 30 qualified radiation oncology residents, and currently has more than 50 residents in training, continuously providing radiation oncology professionals to hospitals throughout China. The department also undertakes classroom teaching and clinical supervision for Shandong University undergraduates and international students, making significant contributions to the development of the domestic physician workforce and to international academic exchange and cooperation.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is now a National Clinical Research Base for New Drugs. Its clinical research includes three-dimensional conformal intensity-modulated radiotherapy, concurrent chemoradiotherapy for tumors, and radiotherapy combined with molecular targeted therapy. Its main basic research directions are tumor radiosensitization and anti-tumor angiogenesis therapy. The department has undertaken 2 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 7 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Young Scientists, and multiple provincial-level projects in Shandong and hospital-level research projects, and has received multiple provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. In recent years, the department has published more than 100 papers in core journals. It has served as chief editor of the People’s Medical Publishing House book Practical Antineoplastic Drug Therapy, as well as Radiotherapy Technology for Tumors and Handbook of Oncology Radiotherapy; deputy chief translator of Cancer—Principles and Practice of Oncology; deputy chief editor of Medical Physics in Radiation Therapy and Radiotherapy of Head and Neck Tumors; and has participated in formulating national standards and guidelines including the Chinese Expert Consensus on Radiotherapy for Glioma, Guidelines for Radiotherapy of Esophageal Cancer, Expert Consensus on Standardized Nutritional Management for Patients Receiving Radiotherapy, Expert Consensus on Oral Nutritional Supplementation for Patients Receiving Radiotherapy, and Guidelines for Whole-Course Pain Management in Radiotherapy.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is characterized by standardized treatment and advanced technology, and provides patients with appropriate, effective, and safe diagnostic and treatment plans. Reminder: Please bring the following materials to your first visit: a summary of previous treatment; imaging materials such as CT, magnetic resonance imaging, and B-ultrasound; cytology and pathology results; endoscopy reports; and recent laboratory test results.
