Paediatric Surgery

The Department of Pediatric Surgery of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University is one of the earliest specialized pediatric-surgery medical units established in Shandong Province. With a long history and rich cultural heritage, a complete range of specialties, advanced equipment, and strong technical capabilities, it integrates medical care, teaching, scientific research, health care, and rehabilitation. After nearly 60 years of development, it has become a clinical master’s and doctoral training site of Shandong University; the Shandong University Research Center for Minimally Invasive Treatment in Pediatric Surgery; the chief designated medical institution in Shandong Province for the rehabilitation assistance program for corrective surgery for children with limb disabilities; a national standardized residency-training base and specialist-physician training base in pediatric surgery; the designated institution of the incoming chair of the Pediatric Surgery Branch of the Shandong Medical Association; and the institution chairing the Pediatric Surgery Branch of the Shandong Research Hospital Association. It is a comprehensive regional medical center for pediatric surgery based in Shandong, serving North China and reaching the whole country.

The department comprises three medical and nursing units: Pediatric Surgery Ward 1, Pediatric Surgery Ward 2, and the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Qingdao Campus. It encompasses five major specialties: general pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric orthopedic surgery, pediatric oncology surgery, and neonatal surgery. It has 130 fixed beds and is equipped with a pediatric anesthesia-induction room, operating rooms dedicated to pediatric surgery, and a monitoring room. Its equipment includes pediatric laparoscopes, pediatric ureteroscopes, pediatric arthroscopes, pediatric-specific anesthesia machines and ventilators, neonatal incubators, pediatric ECG monitors, multichannel precision micro-infusion pumps, and bedside ultrasound machines.

Our department continues to pioneer innovation and lead development in many fields, including pediatric laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, scoliosis correction, treatment of hip dislocation, and trauma care, and is at the national forefront. In addition, a professional, efficient, and high-quality pediatric-surgical nursing team actively works with the medical team to safeguard the rapid recovery of children.

Our department has cumulatively obtained 3 General Program projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 Young Scientists Fund projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 10 various research grants from Shandong Province. More than 15 master’s graduates and more than 10 doctoral graduates have completed their studies, and more than 20 trainees have been admitted to standardized residency training in pediatric surgery. The department also undertakes basic and clinical teaching for five-year, 5+3 integrated, eight-year, and international students of the School of Clinical Medicine of Shandong University.

From the successful separation in 1984 of Shandong Province’s first thoracoabdominal conjoined twins sharing a liver to the successful operation in 2016 on the second case of symmetrical abdominal conjoined twins with a shared-liver malformation, these achievements fully demonstrated the technical expertise and level of the pediatric-surgery team of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and forged our pediatric-surgery spirit of dedication, concentration, professionalism, efficiency, and solidarity.
