Plastic, Cosmetic and Burn Surgery Department
The department's current medical team consists of 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 5 attending physicians, and 3 residents, including 6 holders of doctoral degrees and 4 holders of master's degrees; it also has a 14-member nursing team. There are currently 38 beds in service. The outpatient department has a specialist consultation room for burns and plastic surgery, as well as an independent medical aesthetics outpatient clinic and an independent plastic and cosmetic surgery operating room, equipped with newly purchased medical-aesthetic equipment, including liposuction machines and laser therapy devices. Through continuous development, our department has become one of the comprehensive departments of Qilu Hospital, with specialties including burn treatment, chronic wounds, deformity reconstruction, and cosmetic plastic surgery. We have treated more than 10,000 burn patients, including more than 3,000 patients with severe or extremely severe burns; many had extensive burns. The vast majority of patients not only received life-saving treatment but also achieved good functional recovery, resulting in satisfactory clinical outcomes. After 1994, department staff successively went to the United States, Beijing, Shanghai, and other places for study and advanced training. We successively introduced techniques including skin and soft-tissue expansion, repair of cicatricial alopecia, total auricular reconstruction, total nasal reconstruction, and free-flap transplantation, and our technical level ranks among the leading levels in the province. Using various flap techniques, skin grafting, and other methods, we perform reconstruction for difficult and complex scar contracture deformities, giant pressure ulcers, and extensive skin and soft-tissue avulsion injuries. We also apply the principles and techniques of plastic surgery to perform repair and reconstruction at the same time as the radical excision of various body-surface tumors throughout the body, thereby treating the lesions while substantially improving patients' appearance. As society has developed, people's pursuit of beauty has grown, and the number of people seeking cosmetic procedures has increased. Since the late 1980s, we have successively performed double-eyelid surgery, eye-bag removal, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, breast reconstruction, wrinkle-removal procedures, and others. Using new equipment, we have also introduced aesthetic procedures such as water-jet liposuction and laser cosmetology, while carrying out rapidly developing minimally invasive aesthetic techniques in recent years, including botulinum toxin injections and hyaluronic acid filler treatments, thereby providing the general public seeking aesthetic improvement with an advanced, safe, and reliable medical platform. For nearly 20 years, our department has continuously undertaken teaching, clinical observation, and internship duties for five-year undergraduate and graduate students of Shandong University School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Stomatology. In 1998, the plastic surgery specialty was approved as a doctoral degree-granting program. In 1999, we began admitting master's students and have trained dozens of doctoral and master's students; there are currently 6 graduate students enrolled. In 2002, one doctoral graduate entered a mobile postdoctoral research station and began further training. More than ten of our physicians have successively gone to Beijing Plastic Surgery Hospital, Peking University Third Hospital, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, and Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital for advanced study or to pursue doctoral degrees. In addition, we have participated many times in international and domestic academic exchanges. In recent years, our department has received 2 second prizes for scientific and technological achievements of higher education institutions in Shandong Province, 1 second prize for theoretical achievements in natural sciences from the Shandong Provincial Education Commission, 1 third prize for outstanding scientific research achievements in Shandong Province, and 1 third prize for outstanding scientific research achievements of higher education institutions in Shandong Province. We have served as chief editors of 4 books, including Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Modern Surgery, participated in the compilation of 16 books, led multiple research projects including those funded by the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province, and published more than 100 academic papers. The department has also conducted experimental research in tissue engineering. Animal experiments investigating in vivo osteogenesis after combining human bone marrow stromal stem cells with absorbable scaffold materials have achieved good results, demonstrating that human bone marrow stromal stem cells can serve as seed cells for constructing tissue-engineered bone. We have also participated in the tissue-engineering research component of the national “863” and “973” programs.
