Medical Oncology
The Department of Medical Oncology of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University was established in 1995. After 26 years of development, it has become one of Qilu Hospital's distinctive departments. It currently has 3 wards, 102 officially designated beds and 130 open beds, and carries out medical treatment and research for solid tumors including lung cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer and genitourinary tumors. Wards 4 and 5 have an average length of stay of 3.1 days and more than 12000 annual admissions and discharges. The medical team has 31 members, including 9 chief physicians, 9 associate chief physicians and 17 staff members with doctoral degrees. In recent years, the department has made substantial progress in medical care, teaching and research.
As a distinctive department of the teaching hospital of Shandong University Qilu Medical College, our department strictly follows standardized and individualized principles in clinical oncology care. It actively participated in establishing Qilu Hospital's multidisciplinary tumor diagnosis and treatment teams (MDT) for lung cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer, among others. In line with advances in the discipline and patient needs, it has opened several specialty clinics, including melanoma, immunotherapy, neuroendocrine tumors and minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment. While applying chemotherapy, targeted, immune and endocrine drug-treatment strategies in a standardized manner, it actively develops and applies new oncology technologies. Routine CT- and ultrasound-guided tumor needle biopsy and microwave ablation, together with accumulated experience, have produced a major breakthrough in pathological diagnosis for patients with newly diagnosed tumors. The department currently performs nearly 400 surgeries annually.
The Department of Medical Oncology is a doctoral and master's degree-awarding site in oncology at Shandong University. It currently has 2 doctoral supervisors and 7 master's supervisors, has trained more than 100 doctoral and master's students, more than 150 oncology residents and 35 clinical oncology pharmacists, and since its establishment has trained numerous oncology visiting physicians from cities across Shandong Province. It has successively established academic organizations including the Shandong Immunology Society's Professional Committee for Tumor Molecular Markers and Targeted Therapy, the Shandong Medical Doctor Association's Professional Committee for Neuroendocrine Tumors, and the Shandong Research Hospitals Association's Oncology Chemotherapy Society. It regularly holds academic conferences and training on new advances, and actively undertakes oncology academic exchange and continuing education in Shandong Province.
At the same time, the Department of Medical Oncology has conducted extensive clinical and basic oncology research. As a national clinical research base for new antitumor drugs, it has completed 56 international and domestic multicenter clinical studies of new antitumor drugs and currently has 18 projects under study, including clinical studies of several new immunotherapies and targeted drugs. The department also undertakes a series of national- and provincial/ministerial-level research projects. It has successfully applied for a cumulative total of 10 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and more than 20 provincial/ministerial projects, received 7 provincial/ministerial research awards, and published nearly 100 papers, including more than 60 indexed by SCI. Relying on Qilu Hospital's resources, it has prepared the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical and Health Oncology and initially established a translational medical research model integrating basic tumor research with clinical practice.
After more than 20 years of development, the Department of Medical Oncology of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University is at the forefront in Shandong Province in comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors and clinical research on antitumor drugs. We will continue to uphold Qilu Hospital's motto, “Let medical ethics guide us and pursue excellence in our skills,” and, as always, provide oncology patients with high-quality, standardized medical services and comprehensive, human-centered care.
