Interventional Vascular Surgery Department
The Department of Interventional Vascular Surgery of Peking University Third Hospital is one of the earliest centers in China to carry out clinical interventional diagnosis and treatment. In the early 1990s, through the joint efforts of the Vascular Disease Group of the Department of General Surgery led by Professor Dong Guoxiang and the Radiological Intervention Group led by Professor Li Xuan, Peking University Third Hospital took the lead in China in carrying out interventional diagnosis and treatment for peripheral vascular diseases and various other diseases. In 2001, the Departments of Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology were established independently in succession. After years of development, the two departments joined forces in 2006 to establish the first Interventional Vascular Surgery department in China integrating surgical operations with interventional diagnosis and treatment, pioneering the integrated development of interventional radiology and vascular surgery in China. The department adheres to the development philosophy of "placing equal emphasis on surgery and intervention." All physicians possess solid open surgical capabilities and proficient interventional diagnosis and treatment techniques, achieving the integration of "dual skills" in the true sense. After nearly two decades of continuous development and innovation, the department has made substantial progress in clinical practice, scientific research, and discipline development, demonstrating vigorous vitality and energy, and has always remained at the forefront of the field of interventional vascular surgery in China.
As one of the most comprehensive integrated departments of interventional and vascular surgery in China in terms of its diagnostic and treatment system, the Department of Interventional Vascular Surgery of Peking University Third Hospital covers vascular diseases in all parts of the body (except the heart), mainly including: aortic diseases, cerebrovascular diseases (intracranial aneurysms, intracranial and extracranial arterial stenosis/occlusion, intracranial vascular malformations), visceral vascular diseases (visceral artery aneurysms, ischemic bowel disease, renal artery stenosis, portal hypertension, Budd–Chiari syndrome, etc.), limb vascular diseases (arterial stenosis/occlusion of the extremities, venous thrombosis, arteriovenous malformations), open surgery and interventional treatment for bleeding in various parts of the body, as well as interventional treatment for various tumors and related complications. The department sees more than 33000 outpatient visits each year, nearly 3000 emergency visits, and nearly 5000 discharged patients, with a total of more than 6000 operations performed.
The Department of Interventional Vascular Surgery currently has 45 open beds and is equipped with 3 digital subtraction angiography (DSA) catheter operating rooms. It has 17 physicians, 2 technicians, and 35 nurses. Members of the department’s team hold key positions in several major academic organizations, including the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, the Chinese Society for Microcirculation, the Chinese Research Hospital Association, the China Association for the Promotion of International Medical and Healthcare Exchange, the Chinese Association of Medical Education, and the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, among others, serving at multiple levels, including chairpersons, vice chairpersons, standing committee members, and committee members.
In clinical practice, the department actively performs complex procedures (i.e., combined treatment involving open surgery and interventional techniques), and has achieved major innovations in multiple technologies: among them, "trans-superior mesenteric venous approach portal vein thrombectomy and angioplasty" was the first of its kind internationally; "portal vein pressure regulation with a composite stent during TIPS" and "Y-shaped drainage for obstructive jaundice" were also first reported in China and internationally. In scientific research, the department focuses on cutting-edge areas of interventional vascular surgery and has conducted systematic research in areas such as biodegradable stents and composite abdominal aortic stents, achieving a series of innovative results. At the same time, the department attaches great importance to the creation and transformation of intellectual property rights, having applied for more than ten utility model patents and actively promoting the clinical translation and application of related achievements.
