Emergency Department
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established in 1999 and is one of the earliest clinical departments established by the hospital. The department has developed a functional layout for emergency care covering the entire process, with functional areas including prehospital emergency care, emergency internal medicine, emergency surgery, the emergency resuscitation room, the emergency operating room, the observation and infusion area, emergency wards, the trauma ward, EICU, and others. It has created a “one-stop” comprehensive emergency and first-aid platform and established a closed-loop emergency-care system integrating “prehospital emergency care, in-hospital emergency care, and EICU intensive care.” Focusing on the comprehensive treatment of chest pain, stroke, trauma, poisoning, and various critical and difficult diseases, it carries out all aspects of emergency medicine in full.
The department as a whole covers more than 4700 square meters. Its hardware facilities are comprehensive, including 26 resuscitation-room beds, 23 observation beds, 8 emergency EICU beds, 36 emergency ward beds, 1 standard operating room, 43 seated infusion units, and 8 ambulances. It handles more than 200,000 emergency visits annually and rescues more than 10,000 patients each year, with its emergency-care capacity ranking among the top in the city.
The department is equipped with comprehensive modern emergency hardware, including standard monitoring ambulances, negative-pressure ambulances, noninvasive and invasive ventilators, monitor-defibrillators, cardiac pacemakers, electrocardiographs, gastric lavage machines, B-ultrasound machines, bedside X-ray machines, ECMO, bedside continuous blood-purification equipment, multifunctional monitors, intraosseous puncture needles, patient-warming systems, infusion pumps, and a full range of other high-end life-support equipment. It is supported by an independent emergency laboratory, emergency B-ultrasound room, emergency pharmacy, and standardized emergency operating room, enabling rapid processing of examinations, medication dispensing, and surgery.
Using emergency care as its platform, the department has established red-zone rapid-response green channels for “acute stroke, chest pain, trauma, critically ill pregnant and postpartum women, and neonates and children,” opening a high-speed channel for the rescue of critically ill and severely ill patients. Its services cover all disease categories and emergency procedures in emergency medicine. It routinely provides advanced life support, point-of-care testing (POCT), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), emergency ultrasonography, pulse-contour cardiac-output monitoring (PiCCO), bronchoscopy, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and other critical-care emergency technologies, providing critically ill patients with rapid, precise, continuous, integrated treatment. It has also established specialized emergency services in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, oral medicine, and otorhinolaryngology, comprehensively undertaking the rescue, diagnosis, and treatment of all types of critically ill and emergency patients throughout the hospital.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is a key discipline in advantageous medicine in Shenzhen, a Shenzhen emergency-care training base, and a national specialty base for emergency medicine under standardized residency training. It has long undertaken tasks such as emergency medical rescue during sudden public incidents in the city and major disasters. In addition to clinical work, the department also plays an active role in scientific research and teaching. It conducts a series of clinical and basic studies in areas including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, severe pneumonia, poisoning, trauma, and the prevention and treatment of animal-related injuries, producing numerous academic achievements. The Department of Emergency Medicine steadfastly adheres to clinical diagnosis and treatment as its core and the treatment of emergency and critical illnesses as its distinctive feature, regards medical quality and patient safety as its lifeblood, continuously builds a professionally structured emergency-care talent team with strong emergency-response capabilities, and makes every effort to develop a high-level discipline.
