Radiotherapy
The Department of Radiation Oncology of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established on November 1, 2017. From 2017 to 2019, it successively completed the site selection and design of the linear accelerator rooms and office space; the radiation environmental impact assessment and the assessment of the effectiveness of radiation-protection controls for occupational disease hazards; the bidding and bid opening for medical equipment; the construction and decoration of the radiotherapy rooms and office space; the recruitment of medical and nursing staff; the delivery, installation, commissioning, and testing of equipment; completion acceptance by the Provincial Institute for Occupational Disease Prevention and Control; the application for and issuance of the radiation safety license and the radiological diagnosis and treatment license; the application for and opening of the ward; and many other tasks. In the presence of Academician Yu Jinming, President Chen Yun, and leaders, experts, and scholars from Guangdong Province and Shenzhen, the department officially began operations in September 2019, began admitting patients in April 2020, and started providing radiation therapy services. The Radiation Therapy Department currently has one Varian Truebeam linear accelerator, one Varian Trilogy linear accelerator, one Siemens Definition AS OPEN large-aperture CT simulator, one Varian GammaMedplus iX brachytherapy afterloading unit, one C-Rad Catalyst optical surface-tracking system, six Varian Eclipse 15.6 treatment planning systems, 12 Varian physician workstations, a Varian Mobius quality-control system, a Varian Velocity image contouring and registration system, the Yizhiying artificial-intelligence automatic target delineation system, a SunNuclear three-dimensional water phantom, a Delta4 treatment-plan verification system, a PTW Unidos Webline absolute dosimeter, a SunNuclear IC profiler radiation-field analyzer, an SRS Mapcheck stereotactic treatment-plan verification system, and many other advanced, high-precision devices. It has a comprehensive quality-control system and can perform all radiation therapy techniques, including HyperArc one-click high-resolution radiosurgery, optical surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT), stereotactic radiation therapy, and three-dimensional brachytherapy afterloading, including interstitial implantation. The Radiation Therapy Department consists of a radiation treatment area and a ward. The ward has 30 standard beds, and the radiation treatment area covers 928 square meters. It is clean and bright, warm and comfortable, and filled with a humane atmosphere of care. The Radiation Therapy Department is a collaborative workstation of the Peking University Health Science Center Postdoctoral Mobile Station, a member institution of the Department of Radiation Oncology of Peking University, a master's graduate training site in oncology/radiation oncology for Shenzhen University School of Medicine, Shantou University Medical College, Anhui Medical University, Weifang Medical University, Guangdong Medical University, Hubei University of Medicine, and other institutions, and a standardized residency training base for radiation oncology. It undertakes corresponding clinical, teaching, and research work. Every year, the department holds national-, provincial-, and municipal-level continuing education programs and academic conferences. It has established the signature conference Pengcheng Smart Oncology and Precision Radiation Therapy Forum, which has played an important role in improving the level of radiation oncology in Shenzhen and throughout the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. The Radiation Therapy Department has a professional technical team with extensive clinical experience, a commitment to excellence in its specialty, and a warm service orientation toward patients. It has 55 medical, physics, technical, nursing, research, and auxiliary personnel, including 12 doctoral degree holders and 12 master's degree holders. There are currently 15 clinical doctors, including 2 chief physicians, 3 deputy chief physicians, 8 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians; 7 physicists; 16 radiation therapists; 12 clinical nursing staff; 1 senior research assistant; 1 postdoctoral fellow; and 3 medical support staff. All team members come from well-known institutions and major radiation treatment centers in China and abroad, and possess a high level of clinical diagnosis and treatment expertise and scientific research capacity. “Rigor, excellence, pragmatism, and innovation” are the spirit of the Radiation Therapy Department; continuously improving clinical diagnosis and treatment and benefiting the vast number of patients is its mission. As a key discipline targeted for future development by the hospital, the department will, while completing its clinical work to a high standard, focus on scientific research into radiation injury and radiosensitivity, as well as the development and application of artificial-intelligence technologies. It strives to build an intelligent department and gradually become an integrated team combining medical care, scientific research, teaching, and prevention, continually advancing efforts to overcome cancer.
