Procedure and Treatment Area (including Wound Clinic and PICC Clinic)
The Procedure and Treatment Area of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established when the hospital first opened in 1999. It is a platform department and also a window unit of the outpatient department, with 6 functional areas: a blood-drawing room, injection room, nebulization room, dressing-change room, wound clinic, and PICC clinic (peripherally inserted central venous catheter clinic).
The Procedure and Treatment Area has 10 full-time nurses, including 1 chief nurse, 1 associate chief nurse, 7 nurses-in-charge, and 1 nurse; including 1 intravenous therapy specialist nurse and 3 wound specialist nurses.
The scope of work includes: arterial and venous blood collection, intramuscular injections, intravenous injections, subcutaneous injections, skin tests, fingertip blood glucose testing, nebulized inhalation, wound dressing changes/suture removal, midstream urine collection, urethral secretion collection, deep venous catheter maintenance, PICC placement, and arm-type infusion port implantation.
The special work carried out is as follows: An intelligent blood collection management system has been introduced to enable automatic interfacing of outpatient patients’ laboratory information, automatic queue calling, automatic tube labeling, and automatic blood specimen transport, reducing the number of times and the amount of time patients undergoing blood collection spend waiting in line and shortening the time required for laboratory reports to be issued.
A high-quality, standardized oxygen nebulization treatment room has been established. The environment is clean, comfortable, and well ventilated, allowing patients to watch videos/cartoons while receiving nebulization treatment.
The wound care clinic was established in August 2018, and its annual outpatient volume has reached more than 7000 visits. Wound specialist nurses (international wound therapists) provide consultations and manage various acute and chronic wounds, such as (1) acute wounds: sutured wounds from acute trauma, incised-and-drained wounds, postoperative incisions, other acute traumatic wounds requiring outpatient treatment, and treatment of early scars, etc. (2) chronic wounds: pressure ulcers, diabetic foot, venous ulcers, medication-induced ulcers, wounds caused by radiation injury, difficult-to-heal postoperative wounds, etc. (3) Management of skin problems related to urinary and fecal incontinence. (4) Dressing changes and management of skin problems at puncture sites of indwelling tubes.
The PICC clinic was established in November 2007. It is the first specialized nursing outpatient clinic for deep venous catheter maintenance in Shenzhen. In May 2022, it received a plaque as one of the first batch of Guangdong Nurses Association’s “Famous Doctor and Nurse Studios.” Its annual outpatient volume has reached more than 8000 visits. The PICC nursing clinic is staffed by intravenous therapy specialist nurses who have undergone standardized specialist training and obtained training certificates. Services include: PICC and arm-type infusion port placement; maintenance of PICCs, CVCs, midline catheters, and infusion ports; management and health education for postoperative complications related to PICCs, infusion ports, and the like; prevention and treatment of post-infusion phlebitis; and prevention and treatment of infusion- and injection-related extravasation injuries, etc.
Under the ISO9001 nursing quality management system, which has been in continuous operation for more than 20 years, the Procedure and Treatment Area has always taken continuous quality improvement as its core, upholds the service principle of “putting people first and patients above all,” and remains committed to providing the broad patient community with safe, high-quality, efficient, and satisfactory nursing services.
