Ultrasound Medicine
• Peking University Shenzhen Hospital’s ultrasound service began in 1999; the Ultrasound Imaging Department was formally established in 2001, and unified management of the hospital’s ultrasound diagnosis and treatment was achieved in 2006. Guided by the development philosophy “pursue excellence and serve society,” after more than 20 years of continuous work it has become a large comprehensive ultrasound-imaging discipline integrating medical care, teaching and training, research and industrial transformation. In 2020 it was rated a key ultrasound-medicine discipline of Shenzhen and was nominated for the Fudan South China Top 10 ultrasound discipline ranking for many consecutive years. • The department now has 185 staff: 13 chief physicians, 17 deputy chief physicians, 41 attending physicians, 4 nurses and 5 researchers; 12 physicians have doctorates and 44 have master’s degrees, with those holding master’s or higher degrees accounting for about 2/3. There are 2 high-level overseas talents, 2 discipline leaders selected for the Shenzhen Health Commission elite-talent program, 2 backbone discipline talents and 2 young medical talents, forming a rational medical, research and teaching team. • Clinical care: The department has built a high-standard ultrasound quality-control system with independent intellectual property. It can perform 374 routine ultrasound examinations and 82 ultrasound-interventional diagnosis and treatment services, achieving near-full clinical coverage of ultrasound medicine and providing high-quality ultrasound services to more than 1 million patients each year. In 2024 it was selected as a participating unit in national ultrasound quality-control standard construction. The business area is about 4,000 m², with 79 ultrasound examination rooms, 1 ultrasound intervention outpatient room and 1 ultrasound intervention ward, and 116 advanced color ultrasound diagnostic systems. • Teaching and training: It is one of the first national standardized ultrasound-medicine resident-training bases, a Peking University ultrasound-medicine specialist training base, a Peking University postdoctoral workstation and a master’s training site for more than 10 universities including Peking University. There are 5 postdoctoral supervisors and 12 master’s supervisors. By 2024 it had trained 6 postdoctoral fellows, 86 master’s students and 70 standardized trainees, continuously cultivating and supplying highly qualified ultrasound professionals. • Research and translation: The department has established clinical- and basic-research platforms and a 500 m² laboratory. Main directions are integration of ultrasound diagnosis and treatment, basic research on multimodal ultrasound-imaging materials, and translation of intelligent ultrasound imaging. It has successively developed and promoted AI, 5G telemedicine, VR and other frontier technologies. In recent years it has undertaken 28 research projects, including major Ministry of Science and Technology and National Natural Science Foundation projects and other national, provincial and municipal projects; obtained 66 national patents and 2 software copyrights; led the creation of 1 group standard; achieved 5 technology-transfer results; and received awards including the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award, Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award and Shenzhen Science and Technology Progress Award. It is the deputy-editor unit of the SCI journal JCU and the editorial-office director unit of the international journal AUDT, continuously advancing ultrasound medicine in China and raising its global influence. • The Peking University Shenzhen ultrasound team follows the hospital motto “benevolent heart and skill, broad learning and universal love,” serves the people wholeheartedly, and remains guided by clinical and patient needs. With improved clinical service capacity as its core, high-quality talent development as its responsibility and high-level basic and clinical research as its entry point, it unites its efforts for development and works tirelessly to build a first-class ultrasound-medicine discipline in China.
