Dental Implantology
The Department of Implantology of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology was established in 1997. It is one of the earliest specialized implantology departments established in China and is a specialized department dedicated to clinical oral implantology. It enjoys a high level of recognition and influence in the field of oral implantology both domestically and internationally. Since 1998, it was among the first in China to develop and report a variety of bone augmentation techniques, such as the GBR technique, maxillary sinus floor elevation with bone grafting, and the lateral window bone grafting technique; all have become routine surgical techniques performed by the department. Since 2008, it has been among the first in China to perform the All-on-4 technique for edentulous patients. The patient’s remaining teeth in the mouth are extracted on the same day, implants are placed immediately, and immediate fixed restoration is completed and masticatory function is restored on the same day. Since 2009, it has taken the lead in China in performing immediate implant placement and immediate esthetic restoration for anterior teeth, enabling extraction, implant placement, and immediate fixed restoration of anterior teeth on the same day, thereby meeting patients’ esthetic requirements. Over more than ten years, the department has completed more than 30,000 cases of implant-supported dental restoration under various conditions. The 10-year implant survival rate has reached 96.7%, meeting international standards for oral implant survival rates. The department is equipped with six internationally renowned implant systems and a complete range of implant equipment, internationally first-class specialized surgical equipment, dedicated sterilization equipment, and a professional dental laboratory of international first-class standards, including the German Kavo Everest CAD/CAM processing system, the Nobelbiocare Procera system, the Sirona CAD/CAM system, Swiss Ivoclar porcelain-fused-to-metal and pressable ceramic equipment, the German AEC CAD/CAM system, and an automatic laser casting machine, among other internationally advanced processing equipment. The department comprises a professional implant team of specially and systematically trained implant surgeons (1 professor and 3 associate professors), implant prosthodontists (2 chief physicians and 4 attending physicians), prosthetic laboratory technicians (2 senior technicians and 9 technicians), and nursing staff (2 senior nurses and 7 nurses). All physicians and technicians have received multiple rounds of professional training and education in Germany, Switzerland, the United States, and other countries. Standardization and professionalization are the department’s mission and distinguishing features.
The department is equipped with 1 integrated 3D cone-beam CT and panoramic X-ray unit, 7 dental comprehensive treatment units, 3 dedicated operating rooms, 2 endoscopes, 1 anesthesia machine, and 4 ultrasonic bone surgery units. In addition, the department has 1 dedicated implant laboratory affiliated with it, equipped with 3 CAD/CAM systems, 1 electrical-discharge machining center, 1 laser welding machine, and 2 fully automatic casting machines, among other equipment.
The Department of Implantology of Peking University Hospital of Stomatology received the First Prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Stomatological Association in 2014, was included in the 2013–2014 National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project, has one chief scientist of a National 973 Major Project, and received the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award in 2010.
