Oral Pathology
The Department of Pathology of Peking University Hospital of Stomatology was founded in 1947 by Professor Zheng Linfan, a pioneer of oral pathology in China. It was one of the earliest medical research laboratories established in China and was designated a National Key Discipline Site by the State Education Commission in 1989. It has served as the institution of the heads of the Oral Pathology Group of the Chinese Medical Association in successive terms. At present, it is the institution of the immediate past and incoming chairpersons of the Oral Pathology Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association, and the chief-editing institution for the 1st through 7th editions of the nationally unified undergraduate textbook Oral Histopathology. It enjoys a high reputation in the field of oral pathology throughout China.
In medical services, the Department is primarily responsible for clinical pathological examination and diagnosis, provides rapid intraoperative frozen-section diagnosis for surgical patients, and also conducts expert consultations on slides from outside hospitals. It has a strong team of expert diagnosticians, a high academic level, and strong technical capabilities. The number of pathological diagnoses performed and the level of diagnosis rank among the highest of specialized stomatological hospitals nationwide. Since its establishment, the Department has completed more than 80,000 pathological diagnoses of various types of oral and maxillofacial diseases.
