Orthodontics

The Department of Orthodontics at Peking University Hospital of Stomatology focuses on clinical orthodontic treatment, teaching, and research. It is one of China’s earliest-established, strongest in overall capabilities, and busiest specialized orthodontic departments. Since it was founded in 1949 by Professor Mao Xiejun, a founding figure of orthodontics in China, successive generations of Peking University orthodontists, including Huang Jinfang, Fu Minkui, and Lin Jiuxiang, have led the department to uphold established principles while innovating and to advance through unity and enterprise. It has consistently been at the forefront of China’s orthodontic field in clinical care, teaching, and research; has received national-level awards, awards from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Beijing Municipality, the Chinese Medical Award, and others; and was selected for the 2016—2018 National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project.

The Department of Orthodontics is a leading orthodontic diagnosis and treatment center in China. Of its current orthodontists, 92% hold doctoral degrees, and most have studied abroad for one year or more. It was among the first in China to provide clinical treatment in the areas of combined orthodontic–orthognathic treatment, orthodontic treatment for patients with cleft lip and palate, and orthodontic treatment for sleep apnea, and among the first to apply advanced clinical treatment techniques including implant anchorage, transmission orthodontic techniques, the PASS technique, lingual orthodontics, and bracketless clear-aligner therapy.

The Department of Orthodontics is a standardized specialist physician training base for teaching and cultivating professionals. It currently has 9 doctoral supervisors and 8 master’s supervisors, provides courses in orthodontics-related fields for undergraduate students, graduate students, and physicians in standardized residency training, and also conducts counterpart-assistance programs and training for physicians pursuing further study. It has led the compilation of the first through fifth editions of the nationally unified textbook Oral Orthodontics, the first and second editions of the graduate textbook Oral Orthodontics, and the first and second editions of the Ministry of Education’s 11th Five-Year Plan textbook Oral Orthodontics for long-cycle programs.

The Department of Orthodontics is a research and innovation group with abundant achievements. It publishes and issues dozens of high-level academic papers and academic monographs each year, hosts the Chinese Journal of Orthodontics, and has served as the host institution for the chairs of the 1st–4th and 6th terms of the Orthodontic Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association.

The Department of Orthodontics adheres to the principle of placing patients first in diagnosis and treatment. It has 160,000 outpatient visits annually and is widely praised by patients and their families.
