Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Orofacial Pain Treatment Center
The Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and Orofacial Pain Diagnosis and Treatment Center (Joint Clinic) of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology is a specialized clinical platform integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research. In 1992, Professor Ma Xuchen founded the center and served as its director. It was among the first in China to conduct medical, educational, and research work on temporomandibular joint disorders and orofacial pain, laying a solid foundation for standardized diagnosis and treatment and professional training in this field in China.
The Joint Clinic has a long history and a strong medical team. Professor Zhang Zhenkang, a leading figure in Chinese dentistry, has researched temporomandibular joint disorders since 1961. Professors Zhang Zhenkang and Ma Xuchen and others proposed a systematic clinical classification and diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular joint diseases and incorporated them into textbooks. In the 1970s, papers on temporomandibular arthrography with international influence were published; joint disc perforation repair and reduction was successfully performed for the first time; and the psychological-factor characteristics and immunopathological mechanisms of temporomandibular joint disorders were proposed. Experts seeing patients at the Joint Clinic come from departments throughout Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial medical imaging.
The clinical mission of the Joint Clinic is to diagnose and treat orofacial pain and mandibular motor dysfunction related to the temporomandibular joint, such as orofacial pain, joint clicking, and limited mouth opening. In clinical work, we adhere to the highest professional standards and are committed to providing patients with standardized, economical, and innovative diagnosis and treatment services. The Joint Clinic also undertakes teaching in the clinical theory and practice of temporomandibular joint disorders for graduate students, residents, and visiting physicians from China and abroad at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology.
