Department of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics
Dental and pulp diseases affect the tooth itself and may cause related disease in the tissues around the root apex. Common conditions include caries; non-carious tooth defects such as trauma, wedge-shaped defects, tetracycline-stained teeth and dental fluorosis; pulpitis; and apical periodontitis. The Department of Cariology and Endodontology is a core clinical department of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, dedicated to care, teaching and research in these diseases. In 2010 it was among the first to be designated a national key clinical specialty development project. It currently has 38 modern dental treatment chairs and treats difficult and complex cases.
The hospital describes the department as a leading clinical teaching base and national specialist continuing education center. Its simulation and continuing education rooms support training in microscopic root canal treatment, microscopic apical surgery, aesthetic dental restoration and chairside CAD/CAM restoration, as well as distance teaching and consultation. The department teaches clinical theory and practice to Peking University undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, residents and visiting doctors from China and abroad, and runs national and medical association continuing education programs. It has received support from national and Beijing natural science foundations, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health research projects and Beijing key science projects, and has received science and technology progress awards from the Ministry of Education, Beijing and the Chinese medical community. Its team aims to relieve patients’ suffering and support oral health through careful work and professional care.
