Periodontology
Founded in 1953, the Department of Periodontology at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology adopted advanced international concepts in the early 1980s and integrates clinical care, teaching and research. It ranked first nationally in periodontology in the initial national key clinical specialty assessment in 2010.
The hospital reports long-standing systematic, standardized treatment of periodontal disease and multidisciplinary care led by periodontists for severe and complex periodontitis. It reports good outcomes, preservation of natural teeth in tens of thousands of patients, improved quality of life and treatment at an international level. The department was among the first in China to introduce periodontal tissue regeneration, periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery in aesthetic and functional areas, implant treatment for periodontal patients and treatment of peri-implant diseases. Difficult conditions diagnosed and given targeted periodontal treatment include palmoplantar keratoderma with periodontal destruction, acute leukemia, malignant lymphoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, hypophosphatasia and Laband syndrome.
At the main hospital the department reports 38 doctors: six professors, all doctoral supervisors; six chief physicians; three associate professors; and seven associate chief physicians. Ninety-one percent hold doctorates and five qualify as master's supervisors. It has one chief technician and 11 dental hygienists, ten of whom are qualified doctors; and 35 nurses, including one associate chief nurse, 19 nurses in charge and 14 nurses. Two international visiting professors are appointed, and the department maintains regular academic exchange with leading domestic and international specialists. It has 58 dental chairs and treats over 400 patients daily from across China and overseas.
Each year it trains more than ten visiting dentists and ten nurses from dental colleges across China and runs over ten national clinical periodontal technique courses. Over 30 years it has developed a clinically oriented undergraduate teaching system and become a national teaching model. It was among China's earliest doctoral training sites in periodontology and hosts a postdoctoral program, training more than ten postgraduate students annually. It led compilation of the national textbook Periodontology and the Eleventh Five-Year national planned textbook Clinical Stomatology, and was commissioned by the Ministry of Health to lead China's first Guidelines for Periodontal Disease Prevention and Treatment. It is a national continuing-education training base and a drug clinical research base of the national drug regulator. The hospital reports 28 National Natural Science Foundation and 26 provincial or ministerial grants over the past 15 years, over 100 SCI-indexed papers and several provincial or ministerial awards.
