Hepatobiliary Surgery
The Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery of Peking University People’s Hospital has enjoyed a distinguished reputation in the field of hepatobiliary surgery for many years. It is now a National “211 Project” institution, a key specialty of the Ministry of Health, a key discipline of Beijing Municipality, a doctoral degree-granting discipline designated by the State Education Commission, a key laboratory of Beijing Municipality, the Peking University Institute of Organ Transplantation, and the Peking University Liver Cancer Research Center. It currently has 8 professors, 6 associate professors, 4 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 5 master’s supervisors. It undertakes a number of major national scientific research projects, including special industry projects of the Ministry of Health, the 863 Program, the 973 Program, the 985 Program, key projects under the Ninth through Twelfth Five-Year Plans, the National Science and Technology Support Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. As one of the earliest medical institutions in China dedicated to the treatment of cirrhotic portal hypertension and liver cancer, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery has accumulated extensive experience through more than half a century of effort. It has long maintained a leading position in China in the treatment of diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and other organs, and has trained a large number of backbone specialists in hepatobiliary surgery for institutions throughout the country. The late renowned surgical expert Professor Huang Cuiting was already the first in China to use splenorenal shunts to treat portal hypertension in the 1960s. Together with Professors Du Ruyu and Leng Xisheng, he established the classic theory of the “humoral substance theory,” concerning the pathogenesis of portal hypertension, whose academic value has long been highly regarded by colleagues both in China and abroad. Professors Huang Cuiting and Du Ruyu were successively elected Chairmen of the Chinese Society of Surgery. In the early 1990s, Professor Leng Xisheng was the first in China to promote portocaval shunt surgery using small-caliber artificial vascular grafts, achieving good results. Professor Leng Xisheng also served as the first Chairman of the Surgical Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Surgery. Since Professor Zhu Jiye became Director of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery in 2009, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery has made even greater advances in clinical care, teaching, scientific research, and other areas. Beginning in 2000, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, under the leadership of Professors Zhu Jiye and Leng Xisheng, began performing liver transplantation. To date, it has completed more than 600 liver transplantation procedures in total, and the 1-year survival rate of patients after liver transplantation has reached more than 90%. Both the quantity and quality of liver transplantation rank among the most advanced of all medical institutions in northern China. In the face of increasingly scarce donors, Director Zhu Jiye, as a member and secretary of the Clinical Application Committee for Human Organ Transplantation of the Ministry of Health, has continuously participated in the formulation of standard procedures and technical specifications for organ transplantation involving donation after cardiac death. In 2013, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery completed Beijing’s first liver transplantation from a donation-after-cardiac-death donor, achieving satisfactory results.
