Nuclear Medicine

The Department of Nuclear Medicine of Peking University People’s Hospital originated from the Isotope Room, established in 1958, and has now developed into an independent specialized department. Its work includes radionuclide imaging, radionuclide therapy, and in vitro radioanalysis. It currently has 19 physicians, technicians, and nurses, including 3 with senior professional titles, 9 with intermediate professional titles, and 7 with junior professional titles. The department currently has 1 PET/CT unit, 2 SPECT/CT units, and 1 dual-energy X-ray bone densitometer. It performs more than 30 types of radionuclide imaging examinations, with annual examination numbers in the tens of thousands.

The current level of imaging diagnosis in the Department of Nuclear Medicine ranks among the leading positions nationwide. In addition to using 18F-FDG PET/CT for tumor imaging, its application in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of inflammatory diseases, particularly in the etiological diagnosis of fever of unknown origin, is at the forefront in China. In 2017 and 2018, the Department of Nuclear Medicine held two consecutive national continuing medical education programs, the “Symposium on the Use of PET/CT in the Diagnosis of Fever of Unknown Origin,” which received widespread acclaim from the profession. The national multicenter study on the use of PET/CT for the diagnosis of fever of unknown origin, led by the Department of Nuclear Medicine of our hospital, achieved important research results, and related articles were published in EJNMMI, an international top journal of nuclear medicine.
