Nephrology
The Department of Nephrology at Peking University People’s Hospital was established in 1988. It has a continuously advancing academic team centered on young and middle-aged medical professionals. After decades of unremitting effort, it has developed into a nationally leading nephrology department integrating medical care, teaching, and research, with comprehensive technical capabilities and solid clinical expertise. Our department is currently a 985 national key discipline of the Ministry of Education, a specialist physician training base for nephrology, a National Drug Clinical Pharmacology Base, and a key discipline of Peking University People’s Hospital. It is also the host institution of the journal Chinese Journal of Blood Purification and a Blood Purification Training Base of the Chinese Nursing Association.
The Department of Nephrology currently has 2 doctoral supervisors, 2 master’s supervisors, 3 professors, 8 chief physicians, 2 associate professors, 8 associate chief physicians, and 5 attending physicians. The inpatient ward admits more than 1200 patients annually on average, performs more than 22000 hemodialysis treatments annually on average, and receives nearly 60000 outpatient visits annually on average.
The Department of Nephrology comprises the inpatient ward, outpatient clinic, Blood Purification Center (including the Hemodialysis (HD) Center and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Center), Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Center, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) Center, Renal Pathology Laboratory, Clinical Laboratory, and editorial office of Chinese Journal of Blood Purification. The department has comprehensive rules and regulations, job responsibilities, and routine diagnostic and treatment protocols, and adheres to a system of monthly medical quality assessment and reporting by all departments, thereby promoting continuous quality improvement. The management of the Hemodialysis Center and Peritoneal Dialysis Center is at the forefront nationally. Renal biopsy pathological diagnostic techniques are actively developed; both the number of renal biopsies performed and the number of renal pathological diagnoses rank among the highest in Beijing, and pathological specimens submitted for examination are received from more than 30 hospitals nationwide. The department has established specialized outpatient clinics for CKD, IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, HD, PD, and other conditions, and accepts patients with difficult and critical illnesses from throughout the country. With the support of biobanks for CKD, HD, PD, and CRRT specimens, the department has undertaken projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National 11th Five-Year Plan Science and Technology Support Program, Peking University Clinical Research Projects, the Peking University 985 Fund, and the Special Research Projects for Doctoral Programs of Higher Education Institutions, thereby continuously advancing clinical standards. In recent years, the hospital has continuously increased its investment in the Department of Nephrology. The newly built Hemodialysis Center has a rational layout and implements modern information-based management, providing assurance for continuous quality improvement and helping patients return to society.
The main clinical development directions are: clinical and pathological research on glomerular diseases, critical kidney diseases, integrated treatment of chronic kidney disease, CKD-related bone metabolism disorders and vascular calcification, establishment and maintenance of blood purification access, and blood purification (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis).
