Critical Care Medicine
As a comprehensive critical care department, the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Peking University People's Hospital is China's first integrated adult critical care department. It comprises four wards—medical, surgical, cardiovascular, and the North Campus of Peking University People's Hospital—with a total of 49 beds, and is one of the first national key clinical specialties designated by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. With advances in science and technology, the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Peking University People's Hospital possesses nearly all the diagnostic and treatment equipment used in critical care medicine. The department places great emphasis on training medical staff in the use and operation of diagnostic and treatment instruments and equipment, as well as in the application of related techniques, enabling these advanced devices and technologies to be widely used in clinical practice to achieve better diagnosis and treatment of patients. Building on the surgical ICU established in 1986 and the multiple specialty ICUs subsequently established, all five adult ICUs were integrated at the end of 2008 into China's first multidisciplinary comprehensive critical care department. Following the integration, the concept of multidisciplinary collaborative diagnosis and treatment centered on the Department of Critical Care Medicine became deeply established, and the success rate of rescuing critically ill patients increased significantly. At the same time, large-scale and intensive operations greatly improved the cost-effectiveness of critical care resources.
