Thoracic Surgery
The Department of Thoracic Surgery of Peking University People’s Hospital was established in 1952. After 65 years of arduous efforts, especially the leapfrog development since the beginning of this century, it has become a nationally renowned discipline distinguished by thoracic minimally invasive techniques and with outstanding advantages in the early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Under the leadership of Academician Wang Jun, the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Peking University People’s Hospital is a National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Project; it is a nationally renowned discipline whose principal features are thoracoscopic minimally invasive surgery and comprehensive minimally invasive surgical treatment of lung cancer, with coordinated development in medical care, teaching, and scientific research. It is also a nationally recognized “vanguard” unit with the strongest technical capabilities in thoracoscopic thoracic minimally invasive surgery in China. The department currently has 8 professors and chief physicians, 6 associate professors and associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, 5 resident physicians, and 28 nurses.
Development History
The Department of Thoracic Surgery of Peking University People’s Hospital was founded in 1952 by the renowned surgeon Gu Yuzhi and was one of the earliest departments of thoracic surgery in China. In 1968, the Department of Thoracic Surgery was abolished and merged with the Department of General Surgery. In 1972, the hospital reinstated the Department of Thoracic Surgery. In 1986, the cardiac specialty was separated from the Department of Thoracic Surgery. In 1990, the new campus of People’s Hospital, located in Xizhimen, was completed, and the Department of Thoracic Surgery moved from the old Baitasi campus to the new Xizhimen campus, where an independent nursing unit was established.
Successive department directors Gu Yuzhi, Yang Jun, Hu Jiaqi, and Zhang Guoliang made arduous and extraordinary efforts toward the construction and development of the discipline. In 2000, Wang Jun joined the Department of Thoracic Surgery as a “leading talent,” and the Peking University People’s Hospital Center for Thoracic Minimally Invasive Diagnosis and Treatment was established. Wang Jun succeeded as director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery. In 2007, the Department of Thoracic Surgery moved to a new inpatient building, and the number of beds was expanded to 54. In 2010, the Department of Thoracic Surgery established a chemotherapy ward, increasing the total number of beds to 62. In 2019, Wang Jun, director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Medical Team
Over the past more than 10 years, the department has focused on talent development and the formation of a talent pipeline, gradually building a medical and nursing team with a solid foundation, excellent technical expertise, mutual support, and vigorous progress. It includes 8 professors and chief physicians, 4 associate professors and associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, 5 resident physicians, and 28 nurses. Guided by the medical philosophy of “great medicine with integrity” and the departmental motto of “being low-key in conduct and down-to-earth in work,” they strive to provide every patient with the optimal treatment plan, the best treatment methods, and the most comprehensive medical services, in pursuit of the most satisfactory treatment outcomes. Through the efforts of all colleagues, the discipline’s social influence has risen year by year. In 2015, it ranked first in Beijing in the comprehensive evaluation of medical service performance among key specialties conducted by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning.
