Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
The Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine of Peking University People’s Hospital was established in 1962. The department integrates medical care, teaching, and research. For many years, all colleagues in the department have been committed to the precise diagnosis and standardized treatment of various respiratory diseases and critical illnesses: “Focusing on difficult and severe cases, advancing harmoniously and contributing with dedication; aiming for comprehensive efficiency, striving for excellence and building a brand.” In 2016, our department was selected as the “Most Popular Specialty Department of the Year” in the 9th China Health General Evaluation.
Clinical capacity building is the soul of the department’s development. Through the efforts of several generations, the department has developed into a national clinical diagnosis and treatment center for difficult and critical respiratory diseases and has received the honor of being a “National Key Clinical Specialty.” Professional groups have been established for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pulmonary infections, respiratory critical care, lung cancer, interventional pulmonology, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, and pulmonary vascular diseases, forming a group of professional teams with comprehensive expertise, a well-balanced structure, and outstanding capabilities.
The mutual advancement of teaching and learning runs through the clinical practice of every respiratory physician. This specialty serves as a training and rotation base for clinical medical students, a training base in respiratory medicine and critical care for residents in Beijing, a U.S.-China PCCM specialty physician training base, and an advanced-training base for specialty physicians from hospitals at all levels nationwide.
Research is the cornerstone of the department’s continued development and the banner that establishes its brand. We established the “Beijing Key Laboratory of Genomic and Precision Medicine Testing Technology,” founded a molecular diagnostic system for respiratory pathogens and respiratory diseases, and further expanded our research fields in depth according to the specialties of each academic group.
Looking to the future, as the hospital’s “Talent, Space, and Discipline” “123 Strategic Project” continues to expand, we will uphold the department motto of “Integrity, Perseverance, and Excellence” and strive to establish a first-class respiratory disease diagnosis, treatment, and research center in China and abroad.
