Anaesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology of Peking University People's Hospital was established in 1954 and was among the earliest hospital departments of anesthesiology established in China. Its previous directors were Professors Xie Baizhang, Yu Deshui, and Yang Baxian. The current director is Professor Feng Yi, and the deputy directors are Associate Chief Physician Qiao Qing and Chief Physician An Haiyan. Through the unremitting efforts of several generations of anesthesiologists at People's Hospital, the department has now developed into a comprehensive department integrating clinical care, teaching, and scientific research. It currently has 64 practicing physicians and 19 technical and nursing staff; more than 95% of the physicians hold master's or doctoral degrees, including 5 chief physicians, 12 associate chief physicians, and multiple outstanding university- and hospital-level teachers, forming a large, highly talented, diverse, multilevel, and vibrant team. Basic information and features of the Department of Anesthesiology:
1. Advanced equipment: Peking University People's Hospital currently has 39 operating rooms (27 in the central operating room of the Xizhimen Campus, 9 in the Baitasi Campus, and 3 in the Haidian Qinghe Campus); the post-anesthesia care unit has 24 beds (18 beds in the Xizhimen Campus, 3 beds in the Baitasi Campus, and 3 beds in the Haidian Qinghe Campus). Every operating room is equipped with imported anesthesia machines and monitors, enabling a variety of the most advanced current perioperative vital-sign monitoring modalities, such as ART, CVP, TEE/TTE, FloTrac, PiCCO, CCO, neuromuscular blockade, BIS, TEG, blood gases, anesthetic gases, and body temperature monitoring.
2. Comprehensive range and high complexity of surgeries: As a leading large comprehensive tertiary Grade A hospital in China, the central operating room of Peking University People's Hospital performs relevant surgeries across multiple disciplines, disease types, and specialties, providing excellent opportunities for the training and skill enhancement of anesthesiologists at different stages of experience. The annual surgical volume in cardiac surgery (bypass and congenital heart disease), vascular surgery, spine surgery, otolaryngology, and other disciplines exceeds 500 cases; the annual surgical volume in thoracic surgery (thoracotomy and thoracoscopy), bone tumors, abdominal surgery, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic trauma, bone and joint surgery, urology, breast surgery, neurosurgery, and other disciplines exceeds 1000 cases; moreover, da Vinci robotic surgery, liver transplantation, giant bone tumors, nephroscopy, surgery under rigid bronchoscopy, transbronchial ultrasound, general-anesthesia examinations in premature infants, and photocoagulation treatment of the eye are relatively uncommon in other hospitals and provide valuable opportunities for learning about and accumulating experience with different cases and diseases.
3. Standardized treatment of acute pain: Since 2000, the Department of Anesthesiology of Peking University People's Hospital has provided standardized postoperative analgesia and established a comprehensive APS team; it has now provided postoperative analgesia in nearly 50,000 cases. It was the first in China to advocate multidisciplinary pain management through pMDT, and the overall satisfaction rate with postoperative analgesia has reached 95%. Since 2002, round-the-clock labor analgesia services have been provided, with an analgesic efficacy rate of 98% and no complications, offering parturient women a safer and more comfortable method of delivery. Treatment of acute pain also provides related anesthesia support for painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy, painless oocyte retrieval, painless abortion, and other procedures.
4. Anesthesia risk assessment clinic: Since 2007, the anesthesia risk assessment clinic has been open around the clock, with an annual outpatient volume of more than 12,000 visits.
5. Fully automated digital information management throughout the peri-anesthesia period: Our department is currently one of the departments with the most comprehensive anesthesia information management in China. Throughout the peri-anesthesia period, patient medical records, laboratory tests, surgical and anesthesia scheduling, preoperative anesthesia plans, intraoperative anesthesia records, intraoperative cost records, use of high-value consumables, management of narcotic and toxic drugs, postoperative analgesia follow-up, performance management, anesthesia quality control, and all other processes are managed digitally, greatly improving management standards and efficiency.
“Sense of responsibility, dedication to one’s profession, sincerity, meticulousness, and compassion” are the departmental principles proposed by our predecessors and have become deeply rooted in the heart of every department member. We will use our outstanding technical expertise to provide patients with satisfactory services wholeheartedly.
