Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery
The Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery of Peking University People's Hospital was established in 2022, in September (month 9). It was formed on the basis of the Laparoscopic Surgery Department of Peking University People's Hospital, together with some members of the Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery team of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University. The establishment of the “Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery” at Peking University People's Hospital can be described as a powerful alliance with enormous potential for development. The Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery of Peking University People's Hospital is a specialized team with first-rate laparoscopic technology, a high level of expertise, and strong clinical capabilities. The Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery currently has two wards, Xizhimen and Tongzhou. Our department has 12 physicians and is staffed with a highly capable team possessing strong professional and technical expertise. There are currently 3 professors and chief physicians, 1 doctoral supervisor, 1 master's supervisor, 4 associate chief physicians and associate professors, 4 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician.
Under the leadership of Professor Chen Jie, director of the department, the professional team of the Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery continues to develop. We select surgical procedures according to the principle of “individualized treatment” and each patient's own circumstances. The distinctive features and advantages of our department's diagnosis and treatment include the diagnosis and treatment of various difficult and complex abdominal wall hernias, abdominal wall tumors, abdominal wall infections, abdominal wall reconstruction (plastic surgery), esophageal hiatus hernias, local-anesthesia ambulatory surgery for inguinal hernias and umbilical hernias, incisional hernias, parastomal hernias, pelvic floor hernias, diaphragmatic hernias, lumbar hernias, and other types of hernia, as well as taking the lead at Peking University People's Hospital in carrying out minimally invasive bariatric and metabolic surgery, bringing good news to the many patients we serve.
The Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery took the lead in establishing the China Hernia Specialty Alliance and launched the “China Hernia Registration and Follow-up System,” namely the China Hernia Database. It currently has more than 560 participating institutions, with accumulated data from over 230,000 cases. In 2018, it was awarded the “Laparoscopic Training Base” designation by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. The department organizes and participates in international academic conferences and, in 2018, founded the international journal of hernia and abdominal wall surgery, International Journal of Abdominal Wall and Hernia Surgery, establishing an academic exchange platform for hernia surgeons from China and abroad and promoting the academic development of international hernia and abdominal wall surgery. In 2019, the World Endoscopy Doctors Association established the “International Academy for Hernia and Abdominal Wall Endoscopy Assessment and Standards,” launching the process of standardized surgical quality control in hernia and abdominal wall surgery in China. The department took the lead in launching the “Expert Consensus on the Standardized Process for Ambulatory Inguinal Hernia Surgery” nationwide. Every year, we complete more than 2000 ambulatory inguinal hernia surgeries, making the department a national benchmark for ambulatory inguinal hernia surgery. The “Beijing Pelvic Floor Disease Research Center” was established. The center integrates the advantages of multiple disciplines (MDT), enabling patients with pelvic floor-related diseases to receive appropriate and proper treatment and achieve satisfactory outcomes, while further promoting coordinated development among disciplines and enhancing the hospital's core competitiveness.
