Cardiac Surgery

The Cardiac Surgery Department of Peking University People's Hospital was established in 1987. After several generations of efforts, it has become a first-class cardiac surgery center in China, performing various cardiac and macrovascular surgeries including coronary artery disease, congenital heart disease, heart valve disease, aortic disease, cardiac tumors, arrhythmias, and heart transplantation to treat heart failure. Among them, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting is at the leading level in the country. It has carried out various surgical procedures such as off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, various minimally invasive small incision coronary artery bypass grafting surgeries, coronary artery bypass grafting surgery under local anesthesia, minimally invasive bypass grafting, etc., and won the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ministry of Education. In the treatment of congenital heart disease, we carry out anatomical and functional correction of various diseases including tetrad of Fallot, complete atrioventricular septal defect, transposition of the great arteries, single ventricle, double outlet of the right ventricle, persistent truncus arteriosus, Ebstein anomaly, pulmonary atresia, anomalous systemic venous drainage and complete anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, and have saved a large number of children with congenital heart disease from all over the country. Surgical operations for various advanced severe valvular diseases, aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm, surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, and treatment of benign and malignant cardiac tumors are also featured items of cardiac surgery. Heart transplant patients have successfully survived for more than 10 years.

Cardiac surgery has also made useful explorations in doctor training programs. Our hospital has implemented a "seven-year training system" for young cardiac surgeons to ensure that they can master minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery before the age of 35. The "One Heart Training" project sets up nationwide further training scholarships, all free and fully open training formats, benefiting many surgeons from all over the country.

The Cardiac Surgery Department of Peking University People's Hospital, which is a trinity of medicine, teaching and research, is as always committed to serving patients and relieving their suffering; it is clinically oriented and trains cardiac surgical clinicians; it grasps the direction and develops basic research in cardiac surgery.
