Sleep Medicine
The Department of Sleep Medicine is an emerging interdisciplinary platform that integrates clinical care, research, and teaching and operates independently. Relying on the expert team of the Peking University Sleep Research Center, it is a professional training base for sleep medicine personnel in China.
The Department of Sleep Medicine has been planned and constructed entirely in accordance with international standards. It comprises a central control room, outpatient consultation rooms for sleep disorders, and 10 independent sleep monitoring and treatment rooms. Through high-magnification infrared cameras and a highly sensitive two-way intercom system, 10 beds can be monitored in real time. Patients’ electrophysiological, video, and audio signals can be displayed simultaneously. Each room is equipped with a liquid-crystal television and has an independent bathroom, providing patients with a comfortable medical environment and ensuring the quality of sleep monitoring.
The Department of Sleep Medicine has established an experienced medical, technical, and nursing team. It has integrated outpatient and inpatient services. Diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders can be carried out in different settings, including at home, at the bedside, and in the sleep center. The center’s scope of services covers more than 90 sleep disorders manifested as “being unable to fall asleep, being unable to wake up, and sleeping poorly.” In accordance with international standards, it can diagnose and evaluate sleep disorders such as snoring, sleep apnea, abnormal sleep behaviors, narcolepsy and hypersomnolence, sleep-related movement disorders, insomnia, sleep disorders associated with circadian rhythm disturbances, and sleep disorders in children and adolescents, and develop personalized treatment plans. It is one of the first PCCM single-subject training bases in China. To date, it has trained more than 400 healthcare professionals from across the country, many of whom have passed the international certification for registered polysomnographic technologists. This has improved the local level of diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and standardized polysomnographic monitoring techniques.
