Urology
The Department of Urologic Oncology Surgery at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 2012 and is an important part of Peking University Cancer Hospital. Through the joint efforts of department leaders, including Director Yang Yong and Professor Du Peng, it has become a department of considerable size with a certain reputation and influence in the field of urologic oncology in China. It currently has 30 beds and more than 30 staff members, including 10 physicians: 2 chief physicians who are also professors, 1 chief physician who is also an associate professor, 2 deputy chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician.
Since its establishment, with the support of the hospital leadership and the efforts of all department colleagues, the department has developed rapidly in all areas. It has now acquired equipment related to urologic oncology, including a da Vinci robotic surgical system, laparoscopic equipment, flexible and rigid ureteroscopes, a holmium laser system, a plasma resectoscope, a monopolar resectoscope, cystoscopes, ureteroscopes, and other equipment.
The department has developed and mastered diagnostic and treatment techniques for common urologic diseases and various complex diseases. In particular, it provides minimally invasive surgical treatment and precision pharmacotherapy for urinary system tumors, including systemic treatment for prostate cancer, renal cancer, and bladder cancer. Da Vinci robot-assisted and laparoscopic minimally invasive procedures include: nephron-sparing surgery for renal cancer, through either a retroperitoneal or transperitoneal approach; radical nephrectomy, through either a retroperitoneal or transperitoneal approach; total nephroureterectomy; total cystectomy with urinary diversion; adrenal tumor resection; radical prostatectomy; retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testicular cancer; inguinal lymph node dissection for penile cancer; and other procedures. The department routinely performs various conventional minimally invasive urologic procedures, such as transurethral electrical resection of bladder tumors, transurethral plasma resection of the prostate, and kidney-sparing holmium laser resection of upper urinary tract tumors using a flexible ureteroscope. It also routinely performs various complex urologic oncology operations, such as transabdominal radical nephrectomy and removal of inferior vena cava tumor thrombus for giant renal cancers, surgery for giant pelvic-floor sarcomas, surgery for giant retroperitoneal malignant tumors, total cystectomy, and various urinary diversion or neobladder procedures. Its current diagnostic and treatment services cover common and rare urologic tumors, including renal cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, penile cancer, renal pelvic cancer, ureteral cancer, pelvic sarcomas, and other urinary system tumors. Leveraging the multidisciplinary strengths of Peking University Cancer Hospital and actively collaborating with medical oncology, the department provides multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment for various urologic tumors. It can provide patients with comprehensive treatment, including complete cancer diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and targeted drug therapy, thereby significantly prolonging the survival of patients with urologic tumors. In research, the department leads or participates in more than 80 clinical trials, focusing on innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary system tumors such as prostate cancer, renal cancer, and bladder cancer, thereby significantly improving the clinical diagnosis and treatment of related diseases.
