Head and Neck Surgery

Peking University Cancer Hospital

Head and Neck Surgery is a specialty that primarily uses surgery to treat head and neck tumors. Its treatment scope includes head and neck tumors such as thyroid cancer, laryngeal cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, oral cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, cancers of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, salivary gland tumors, and other head and neck tumors. It currently has 31 beds and 24 medical and nursing staff members, including 4 chief physicians and 3 deputy chief physicians. More than 1,500 patients undergo surgery annually, and annual outpatient visits exceed 40,000. Patients come from all over the country, with patients from outside Beijing accounting for more than 70%. In the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer, the department has always taken “standardization and precision” as its hallmark, used domestic and international guidelines as its criteria, strictly determined the indications for fine-needle aspiration and surgery, adhered to standardized and meticulous surgery, and continuously applied new technologies and concepts in clinical practice. To meet patients’ aesthetic requirements, we routinely perform endoscopic thyroidectomy through various remote-access approaches, as well as active surveillance and follow-up and ablation therapy for thyroid microcarcinoma. For patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, routine multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultations are held to formulate standardized and individualized treatment plans, enabling patients to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes while preserving their appearance and function. For extensive defects after resection of advanced or recurrent head and neck tumors, various pedicled or free flaps are used for primary reconstruction, achieving the goal of surgical salvage treatment. Head and neck surgical oncology is an emerging discipline in the history of medicine and has made remarkable progress over the past 20-plus years. Our physicians regularly train at the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, stay abreast of new developments worldwide in the treatment of head and neck tumors, and, based on the latest international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and head and neck cancers, fully leverage the multidisciplinary team collaboration model of a specialized cancer hospital to diagnose and treat every patient according to standardized criteria. At the same time, we apply the latest medical technologies and advances to clinical practice, including minimally invasive treatment, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, so that many patients can receive advanced and effective treatment in a timely manner. Head and Neck Surgery is a professional team integrating clinical care, teaching, and research; improving patients’ survival rate and quality of life is our enduring goal.
