Urologic Oncology Department

Peking University Cancer Hospital

The Department of Medical Oncology for Urological Tumors at Peking University Cancer Hospital was renamed from the former Department of Medical Oncology for Renal Cancer and Melanoma. After more than a decade of rapid development, the department has accumulated extensive clinical experience in the medical treatment of urological malignancies, including renal cell carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, prostate cancer, adrenal tumors, and germ-cell tumors, and has achieved a series of results, with its professional influence ranking among the leading institutions in China. The department handles more than 30,000 outpatient visits and admits more than 8,000 patients annually. It has 10 physicians and 1 full-time research staff member; all physicians on staff hold doctoral degrees, including 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 1 assistant researcher. The discipline leader, Director Guo Jun, serves as Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) and as deputy chair of the CSCO Specialized Committees on Renal Cell Carcinoma, Urothelial Carcinoma, and Prostate Cancer. The department is one of the lead institutions responsible for drafting the CSCO guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of renal cell carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, and prostate cancer, and is a deputy-leading institution of the Rare-Type Renal Cancer Collaborative Group of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. In recent years, five young physicians have returned from study abroad, and the department has established good collaborations with multiple international oncology centers. The department’s specialty is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the urinary system, with systemic medical therapy as its main approach, and it collaborates with the Departments of Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Interventional Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, and other departments in multidisciplinary team (MDT) diagnosis and treatment. Discipline development emphasizes medical care, teaching, and research equally, combines clinical and basic research, and guides and promotes standardized diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the urinary system in China. The department leads and undertakes multiple clinical studies of new drugs for urological tumors, including axitinib, pazopanib, everolimus, vorolanib (CM082), toripalimab, and disitamab vedotin, for which treatment indications have been approved, thereby enabling more cancer patients to benefit from these drugs. Its research focuses mainly on cancer immunotherapy; drug resistance and its reversal; research into the inhibition of tumor neovascularization; and targeted gene therapy for tumors. It has received 8 grants from national, provincial, university, and hospital funds, totaling more than 5 million yuan in research funding. It has published nearly 100 SCI papers, including multiple research papers in leading international oncology journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncol, JAMA Oncol, Ann Oncol, J Clin Oncol, and Clin Can Res, and has been selected multiple times for oral presentations at the ASCO Annual Meeting. Multiple research findings have been cited in the US NCCN Kidney Cancer Guidelines, the Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Kidney Cancer, the Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Urothelial Carcinoma, and other guidelines, making an important contribution to advancing the diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the urinary system in China and abroad.
